Missing from the Presidential Debate: Long-Term Care

Two Candidates Respond to National Survey but Many Remain Silent on How to Support Older Adults and Individuals with Disabilities Who Need Care at Home.

Washington, D.C., February 26, 2012 -- Every day, over 10 million frail seniors, younger people with disabilities, and their families struggle to find and pay for long-term care to stay independent and remain at home, and the need for care is expected to grow to over 15 million Americans by 2020.

Yet, the issue of long-term care has been completely absent from this year’s presidential campaign. No questions have been asked during the debates. The candidates have not posted any views or positions on their websites, and only two candidates have responded to a national survey on their views to address this growing national challenge.

Long-term care helps older adults and individuals with disabilities manage everyday activities, such as dressing, bathing, using the bathroom, preparing meals, and taking medication.

While these home care services are cost-effective and help people stay independent and out of expensive nursing homes, they are not covered by traditional health insurance. Medicare does not cover them, and only 3% of adults have private long-term care insurance.

Medicaid offers some coverage for long term care, but individuals must spend-down and impoverish themselves to qualify - often exhausting a lifetime of savings. Waiting lists also have doubled over the past decade, with some states cutting home and community-based services to trim budgets.

As a result, over 90% of all long-term services provided today are delivered informally by more than 42.1 million family members. These caregivers often face enormous burdens, adversely affecting their health, ability to work, and financial security.

To help raise this critical issue among the presidential candidates, 15 national aging and disability organizations, including the National Council on Aging (NCOA), invited each candidate to answer five questions about their views on long-term care. The questionnaire was distributed in November to all major candidates for President, regardless of political party affiliation.

So far, only two presidential candidates-Barack Obama and Newt Gingrich-have responded to the questionnaire. The five questions and responses received to date are available at http://www.ncoa.org/LTSSsurvey.

FPL Engineer Shares Love of Engineering with Under-Served Youth

“It’s important to me to be able to give back to my community by promoting science and engineering fields to children who have limited exposure to them,” said FPL Production Assurance Engineer Melanie Roger. “If I can help get young children interested in the sciences and have a desire to enter into the field, than I feel as though I've been successful. We should all do our part in ensuring the success of our future leaders.”

Juno Beach, FL, February 25, 2012 -- Florida Power & Light's Melanie Roger has a passion for her profession.

As a young girl, she dreamed of going into medicine, like her parents. It wasn't until she got to college, at the University of South Florida, that she decided to change course. Roger switched her major to engineering, hoping it would help her “stand out” among the other medical school candidates. During her course of study, she discovered this was her true love.

“It taught me a different way to think and how to solve a problem using numerous methods,” Roger said. “I want to share that with others.”

As a Production Assurance Engineer at Florida Power and Light’s Lauderdale combined cycle plant, Roger enjoys sharing her enthusiasm for engineering with the youth of her community. She volunteers with a group called SECME - the Southeastern Consortium of Minorities in Engineering. It’s a national organization that seeks to prepare under-served or under-represented students for careers in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

“It’s important to me to be able to give back to my community by promoting science and engineering fields to children who have limited exposure to them,” said Roger. “If I can help get young children interested in the sciences and have a desire to enter into the field, than I feel as though I've been successful. We should all do our part in ensuring the success of our future leaders.”

This month, Roger got a chance to share her passion for engineering with students from 55 schools throughout Palm Beach County. She served as a judge at the annual SECME Olympiad - a competition that’s the result of a year’s worth of study, experimentation and creativity.

This year students squared off at Santaluces High School in Boynton Beach on Feb. 11. The Olympiad theme, “Plan It, Live It, Build It” featured a wide variety of hands-on activities and competitions that included a “Brain Bowl” - a trivia-like game that pits students against the clock and one another, to answer science-related questions. The students also competed against one another to see who could design the strongest wooden bridge, the fastest “mousetrap car” (propelled by a spring through a mousetrap), and the highest-flying water bottle rocket. Other competitions included creating essays, poems, banners and posters for the event.

Roger joined several other FPL engineers as a volunteer judge. “It was so energizing to see how excited the kids were about participating in the Brain Bowl,” she said.

Roger advises students that pursuing a career in engineering can be challenging, but she says it is also very rewarding. She encourages students to feed their curiosity and never stop learning. “Perseverance always prevails,” she says.

After three years of filming and re-filming in the midst of cast changes and theme changes, the show finally premiered. Finnish timber export demand rise highlighted by FRA

Finland's increased timber products expert figures show that demand for timber is set to grow, according to FRA.

Seattle, United States, February 23, 2012 -- Finland’s increased timber products expert figures show that demand for timber is set to grow, according to Forestry Research Associates (FRA).

The research and analysis consultancy was responding to figures showing that Finland’s forestry industry exports rose by 4 per cent last year, and the value of the industry increased to EUR 20.8 billion.

FRA added that the increase reflects analysts’ views that the demand for timber in China, India and other growing economies, is huge and will continue to grow. Indeed, demand will start to exceed supply, driving up timber process and proving profitable for those with cash invested in forestry, according to many experts.

FRA also cited other factors like the increase in damage from the Pine Beetle in Canada and the rise in taxed on timber export in Russia, that could lead to greater demand from Europe, South America and the US.

Timo Jaatinen, the Director of the Finnish Forest Industries Federation, said that they must keep control of the forestry industry from a domestic point of view. “The forest industry's products count among Finland's most significant export articles and they are central to the maintenance of national prosperity,” he stated.

FRA’s analysis partner, Peter Collins, said that encouraging investment in sustainable forestry management is important for the future of the industry around the world. “Putting money into sustainable forestry projects in countries like Costa Rica and Brazil, help to ensure that the industry can provide a living for generations to come.

“It also helps to protect native forests through the growth on plantation trees for felling and export, while native forests can remain unscathed.”

FRA support projects such as Greenwood Management’s plantation project in Brazil that grows teak, eucalyptus and other non-native species for the production of timber and charcoal. Charcoal is in high demand in the Brazilian steel industry, which is expanding in preparation for the World Cup and the Olympics later this decade.

The drop began after a bipartisan 2011 law toughened the state’s immigration enforcement policies. The reform prompted many low-skilled illegal immigrants to leave the state, and was slammed by advocates for illegal immigrants, including Tom Perez, the chief of the Justice Department’s civil regulation division.

"We expect the illegal aliens to leave any state or town where they hear local Americans will be enforcing the popularly supported immigration laws duly passed by our constitutionally empowered Congress," said William Gheen. "Our activists are taking steps to make sure every state and town lawmaker knows it is incumbent upon them to protect American citizens from the dire consequences of invasion when the federal government fails in its most basic responsibility to enforce Article 4 of the US Constitution."

Carter's, Inc. (NYSE:CRI) Investor Lawsuit could end with $20million Settlement

A settlement in a lawsuit for certain investors in NYSE:CRI shares was proposed and all NYSE:CRI stockholders should contact the Shareholders Foundation.

San Diego, CA, USA (February 22, 2012) -- The Shareholders Foundation announces that a settlement in a lawsuit filed on behalf of certain NYSE:CRI investors was proposed.

Investors who purchased Carter's, Inc. (NYSE:CRI) shares, between March 16, 2005 through November 10, 2009, and investors who purchased prior to March 2005 and still hold any of those CRI shares have certain options and should contact the Shareholders Foundation at mail(at)shareholdersfoundation.com or call +1(858) 779 - 1554.

In November 2009 a lawsuit was filed by investors alleging Carter's and certain of its officers and directors with violations of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. The plaintiffs alleged that Carter's statements and filings between March 16, 2005 through November 10, 2009 were allegedly materially false and misleading.

In September 2011 the parties entered into mediation and in December 2011 a motion for preliminary approval of partial class settlement was filed. Pursuant to the proposed settlement several defendants agreed to pay $20million to end the lawsuit. The settlement still needs final approval by the judge.

Meanwhile certain directors at Carter's, Inc. still face another lawsuit recently filed by a current long term investor in NYSE: CRI shares. The plaintiff alleges that between 2004 and 2009 former Executive Vice President of Sales at children's clothing marketer Carter's Inc. allegedly manipulated the amount of discounts Carter's granted its largest wholesale customer in order to induce it to purchase greater quantities of Carter's products. He allegedly then concealed his actions by persuading the customer to defer subtracting the discounts from payments until later financial reporting periods. The plaintiff claims that certain directors caused Carter’s Inc to publicly issue false financial results by improperly reporting millions of dollars in margin support payment to major wholesale customers in incorrect periods and as a result the defendants caused Carter’s to improperly recognize revenue on millions of dollars of product sold via wholesale customers.

Carter’s later had to restate its historical financial statements for the fiscal years 2004-2008 and in late 2010 the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission charged the former Executive Vice President of Sales of Carter's, Inc for allegedly engaging in financial fraud and insider trading.

Those who purchased Carter's, Inc. (NYSE:CRI), including those who purchased CRI shares as early as 2005 or 2004 and currently hold those NYSE CRI shares, have certain options and should contact the Shareholders Foundation.

Mr Fox explained that the process of investing in ethical causes is also rewarding in a way that investing in faceless corporations will never be. He talked about how the carbon credits markets will heat up at the end of the year when the Kyoto agreement expires. He said, “The expiration of this agreement will see a large rise in Voluntary Emissions Reductions (VERs) which are a type of credit that fall outside the guidelines and obligations of Kyoto, and thus open up a wider range of initiatives designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.”

50 West Palm Beach Families received Free Home Energy Makeovers from FPL for Valentine's Day

"Our energy makeover teams are helping make the lowest electric bill in the state even lower by sharing tips from FPL's energy efficiency programs and implementing easy, low-cost improvements that can save customers even more money," said FPL’s External Affairs Director Don Kiselewski.

Juno Beach, FL, February 15, 2012 -- In partnership with the City of West Palm Beach, Florida Power & Light Company recently gave 50 families in the Poinciana and Vedado Park neighborhoods a special Valentine’s Day present. The families received free Home Energy Makeovers, where FPL experts installed energy-efficient upgrades to help residents save money and lessen their impact on the environment by reducing energy consumption. FPL's Home Energy Makeovers also marked the kick-off for the City’s Fourth Annual e4 Sustainability Summit, a two week-long initiative designed to help residents learn how to incorporate green practices into their daily lives.

Approximately 60 energy experts from FPL and city employee volunteers traveled through neighborhoods to deliver the energy efficiency upgrades, which are expected to save these FPL customers, many of whom are senior citizens living on fixed incomes, as much as 25 percent on their utility bills.

Since 2006, FPL has installed extensive energy efficiency upgrades in 700 homes through the company's Home Energy Makeover program. The program cumulatively is saving the participants an estimated $140,000 combined each year.

“FPL is proud to continue our partnership with the City of West Palm Beach, and help more residents in the area reduce their energy use and save on their monthly expenses,” said FPL’s External Affairs Director Don Kiselewski. "Our energy makeover teams are helping make the lowest electric bill in the state even lower by sharing tips from FPL's energy efficiency programs and implementing easy, low-cost improvements that can save customers even more money."

City officials, including City of West Palm Beach Mayor Jeri Muoio and Commissioner William Moss, joined approximately 60 FPL volunteers and helped out with energy-efficient upgrades as part of the Home Energy Makeover team.

“Giving our residents the resources to be more energy-efficient in their daily lives is a big priority for us, and the makeovers are the perfect start to our e4 Sustainability Summit,” Mayor Muoio said. “Our partnership with FPL helps give the residents of West Palm Beach the tools and information they need to save money and make a positive impact on their daily lives.”

A total of 12 Home Energy Makeover teams visited homes of pre-qualified customers for up to two hours each to install upgrades and educate homeowners about ways to reduce their energy usage. Upgrades included:

• Repairing air conditioning ducts

• Checking and installing insulation

• Installing lifetime air conditioning filters

• Installing compact fluorescent lights

• Inserting refrigerator and freezer thermometers

• Installing weather stripping

• Installing water-saving showerheads and faucets

Most of these energy efficiency upgrades can be adopted by any FPL customer looking to make smarter, cleaner energy choices. AAA: Billionaire's decision to invest in forestry shows ethical approach

A billionaire investor has this week opted to put much of his cash in forestry investments, in a move that has been welcomed by alternative and ethical investment advocates, AAA.

Boston, MA, USA, February 14, 2012 -- A billionaire investor has this week opted to put much of his cash in forestry investments, in a move that has been welcomed by alternative and ethical investment advocates, Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA).

New Zealand-born and Singapore-based billionaire, Richard Chandler has decided to invest some $150 million into Tasmanian timber group Gunns, which means that he is now one of the their largest shareholders. The investment is intended to be used by the firm to finish the development of its long-awaited Bell Bay Pulp Mill. Chandler is expected to want to start influencing the business and driving growth.

Chandler claims that having an ethical influence on firms is part of the responsibility that comes with investing in them. He said, “Responsible investors will engage corporate governance issues where they encounter them, as an intrinsic and necessary component of professional investment management."

AAA's analysis partner, Anthony Johnson, claims Chandler is the latest in a line of influential investors to opt for an ethical approach to investing. Mr Johnson said, Investing in forestry can be an exceptionally ethical approach to making money as sustainable forestry helps communities to prosper while maintaining habitats for wildlife and adding to carbon absorption.”

Adding to the amount of forested land in a country is one of the best and most cost-effective ways of reducing carbon emissions thanks to the carbon sequestration characteristics of trees, claims AAA.

AAA supports forestry plantation investments, such as the one run by Greenwood Management in Brazil, which enables investors to buy up sections of sustainably-operated plantation land, which provide forestry products including charcoal for the steel industry.

Timber prices are expected to increase in the coming years as demand from Europe and emerging economies like China and India starts to exceed supply. Already, China is becoming one of the world’s major importers of timber and this trend is set to continue as its economy grows further.

Latest Android app from UK Theatre Web uses show posters to make finding theatre tickets even easier

UK Theatre Web have released an updated version of their free Android application for smart phones featuring an experimental poster recognition service which aims to make it even easier for customers to find, compare and buy West End theatre tickets.

(United Kingdom - February 14, 2012) -- Innovative what's on listings and ticket comparison website UK Theatre Web (http://www.uktw.co.uk) have released an updated version of their free Android application for smart phones featuring an experimental poster recognition service which aims to make it even easier for customers to find, compare and buy West End theatre tickets.

The brand new feature of the app allows users to snap the poster of top West End shows using the camera on their phone so that clever technology can automatically recognise it and display show information and a "Call for Tickets" button. The poster can be photographed from a billboard, magazine or newspaper.

At present the experimental system will recognise the publicity posters of around 30 different shows and plays currently running in London’s West End including War Horse, Legally Blonde, Shrek the Musical, The Wizard of Oz and Billy Elliot.

The UKTW App, Version 1.6 of which can now be downloaded for free from the Android Market (search for UKTW), allows searching of the UKTW listings database by town, show or person providing access to extensive details including venue maps, cast and ticket information provided by the SeatChoice ticket finder service. The UKTW App is designed to provide basic listings details even if no internet connection is available by using a local copy of the key listings information that can be updated regularly. Boston, MA, USA, February 13, 2012 -- In a move that further underlines the attractiveness of forestry investments, according to Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA), the Pension Protection Fund is establishing a dedicated panel for forestry and agricultural investments.

The fund, which is worth well over $10 billion, has issued tenders for managers to sit on the panel, which will be dedicated to making decisions about growing and selling timber and investing in agricultural land.

This is just the latest in a line of panels that have been set up to concentrate on investing in alternative asset classes, which are becoming much more attractive as the stock market remains volatile.

AAA is a supporter of timber investment and particularly investment into sustainable plantation projects in developing countries. Its analysis partner, Anthony Johnson, explained, “As well as providing investors with the peace of mind that only comes with making ethical investment choices, investing in timberland can be extremely lucrative.”

Average returns from forestry investments have easily exceeded returns from equities in the past decade or so. In addition, anyone investing in timber has the added benefit of being able to sit on their investment and watch it grow if the market is not good when it’s time to sell.

“If timber prices are low when an investor’s timber stock reaches maturity, they can simply hold onto it for as long as they wish, in order to sell it when prices recover,” added Mr Johnson.

“In the meantime,” he continued, “their trees will grow by a further eight per cent per year, adding to the value of the timber.”

Most plantation schemes, like that run by Greenwood Management in Brazil, for example, grow non-native, fast-growing species such as acacia, eucalyptus and teak, that are popular for specific purposes such as the manufacture of charcoal or in the construction of homes or for furniture making.
