CellGuide will add Baolab’s recently launched 3D NanoCompass™ IC to their GPS chip, to create the CLIOX-C, the world’s first fully integrated GPS and compass device. Integrating the Compass and GPS together enables 'point and identify' augmented reality features to be easily incorporated in mobile devices, tablets, and cameras. The CLIOX-C co-packaging of compass and GPS functions creates a highly complementary, Location Based Service enabling solution, which is offered at a very competitive price point and footprint. Approaches to HIV Eradication

The various approaches to HIV eradication all address a problem, and that problem is the HIV reservoir. HIV reservoirs have been called the last hiding place for HIV within the body. The final step toward finding a cure against HIV lies in dealing with HIV reservoirs.

Toulon, France, August 30, 2011 - What can be done about HIV eradication? The advancements in scientific technology and medical treatments have made significant progress in managing HIV and making it a chronic condition in most patients; however, the next logical step toward a cure has been elusive. Researchers have been working hard for the past few years on closing the gap between manageable disease and functional cure, and several different approaches have been explored or are currently being discussed. While antiretroviral therapy (ART) has been effective against HIV virus out in the open bloodstream, there are pockets of HIV that lie dormant in cells until antiretroviral therapy ceases, which allow them to become active again. These pockets are called HIV reservoirs. The approaches to HIV eradication focus mainly on how to deal with these reservoirs.

Let's talk about some of the discussed approaches; seven of them to be exact. On one approach, ART is started before HIV has a chance to establish reservoirs. This normally takes place when a person is just infected with HIV (acute HIV infection), very early in the process. The hope is to stop viruses before reservoirs can be established. In another approach, ART is intensified greatly in order to stop completely HIV replication. An alternate strategy is to activate dormant T-cells so the remaining HIV reservoirs can be flushed out and eliminated.

There are also strategies that deal with preventing the virus from infecting additional cells directly. If the HIV reservoirs can't be eliminated, one approach involves keeping the reservoirs dormant forever, keeping the HIV from ever replicating again. This means finding ways to disable the virus's ability to replicate. Alternatively, a sixth strategy protects the uninfected cells from ever being infected. The seventh discussed approach attempts to strengthen the body's natural immune system when exposed to HIV, very much like how a vaccine works.

The various approaches to HIV eradication all address a problem, and that problem is the HIV reservoir. HIV reservoirs have been called the last hiding place for HIV within the body. The final step toward finding a functional cure for HIV lies in dealing with HIV reservoirs. The dormant viruses hiding in these places make it very easy for a person's viral load to increase dramatically if ART is stopped even for a short time. Therefore, in conjunction with ART, one of the known possible approaches for HIV eradication-or possibly approaches that haven't been thought of yet-will become increasingly important to develop and implement.

New Book Discusses the Master Key to Weight Management for Life

FPL helps restore power to customers in heavily flooded and tree-damaged path of Hurricane Irene

Juno Beach, FL, USA, August 30, 2011 -- FPL continues to support Delmarva Power's local recovery efforts in Delaware following Hurricane Irene. FPL has deployed 160 employees and contractors to help in the restoration effort, by clearing vegetation and hanging new power lines.

In the second installment of FPL’s blogs from the field, FPL lineperson Khristal Hunter shares her experience traveling out of state with FPL crews to help restore power to customers impacted by a major weather event. Khristal was interviewed about her first few days cleaning up the aftermath of Hurricane Irene while she and the rest of her crew were en route to a restoration site this morning in Newark, Del.

Q: How are you? What type of damage are you seeing up in Delaware?

A: It's going well, we are making progress. We're seeing a lot of trees on wires, but once our vegetation management crews remove the debris, we are able to get in there and set fuses again to get the power back on. It's always a good feeling whenever you restore power, I don't care how many times it happens.

Most of the damage that we're seeing is tree-related, but there is quite a bit of flooding too. The big difference I've noted, coming from Broward County, is all the space between the houses and the distance from the road carrying the power to the actual residence -- houses are set back so far from the road. In some cases, the homeowners probably don't even know we're out in front of their home! Now, that's different!

Q: While female crew members are a minority, you are the only female linesperson in FPL's restoration team up there in Delaware. What's that like?

A: It's fine. The guys are great.

Q: Are you seeing very many customers? What's the reaction been?

A: As I described, the neighborhoods that we are working in are so different from what I'm used to seeing in Florida that we aren't seeing as many customers. But as cars drive by and see us working out in the road, they are waving to us and giving us the thumbs-up.

Q: What else is different from working there versus here?

A: You know, while the destruction of Hurricane Irene is certainly different from what we see day to day in Florida, the biggest difference is the temperature! Sure, it's warm here, but it's way cooler than it is in Miami today! That's a nice change.

Q: Is there anything else that you would like to say or add?

A: Just that I'm proud to be a part of this team and we are very glad to help Delaware. Oh, and hi, mom!

FPL Crews Support Northern Utility's Local Restoration Efforts After Hurricane Irene

FPL is now providing crews to aid in the recovery effort for Hurricane Irene. FPL has sent 160 employees to the Northeast to help in the restoration effort, by clearing vegetation and hanging new power lines.

Juno Beach, FL, USA, August 29, 2011 -- As Florida’s largest utility, Florida Power & Light Company has had its share of experience with hurricanes and their aftermath. FPL is now providing crews to aid in the recovery effort for Hurricane Irene. FPL has sent 160 employees to the Northeast to help in the restoration effort, by clearing vegetation and hanging new power lines.

One such crew member is Vic Arena, FPL Operations Leader. Vic was interviewed via telephone in Newark, Del., where he is assisting on the front lines of the restoration effort. He is responsible for supervising crews dispatched to Delaware over the weekend to support Delmarva Power’s recovery efforts. A storm restoration veteran, Vic understands how to restore power safely and efficiently.

Q: Where are you? What have you seen so far?

A: Our team arrived in Delaware on Aug. 28 around 8 p.m. Upon arrival, we were briefed by Delmarva Power (which services approximately 498,000 electric delivery customers in Delaware and the Delaware Peninsula.)

On the drive up, we could see some damage and we noticed that there were around 40 miles on I-95 in the area of Richmond, VA, where there were no gas stations in operation, due to lack of power. When we ventured off the interstate, we could see flooded roads and I saw a substation that was 3 feet under water.

From what we have learned today, much of the damage in this area is along the coastal areas. We are waiting for our “job packets” and are looking forward to getting out to the areas that have been impacted by Hurricane Irene and helping Delmarva Power get its customers’ lights back on.

Q: What are the biggest challenges moving a convoy like this through a disaster area?

A: The biggest challenge when you have so many trucks heading north for an extended distance is planning the trip so that you have enough fuel. We have to anticipate how far we can go on a tank, which is about 250 miles for our trucks, and we have to make sure we don't stretch it too far or we could run into an area without of fuel. We're traveling with our own fuel tanker but we don't want to use that unless we have to.

Q: Do you have a sense of the work you'll be called on to start today?

A: We are waiting to get our specific assignments from Delmarva Power, but it will likely involve putting wire back up and placing poles back in. Right now we are setting up our site and taking care of logistics on our end.

Q: What’s the morale like for your crews?

A: They're ready to get to work. It was a long drive and we are ready to get out into the field and help people.

Q: Why does FPL send crews like yours to other states to help in disaster situations?

A: We know what it’s like to experience major storms and just as we are helping Delmarva Power now, we have had to call for help from other utilities in the past.

Sometimes when you go on a trip like this, you see some of the people that came down to help you. It’s a bonding experience and this is an opportunity to give back.

Q: How long will you stay?

It depends on how long Delmarva Power needs our help. I can tell you that when we went to Texas to help out after Hurricane Ike a few years ago, we expected to go for a week and I think we were gone for three weeks. This time we've been told to pack for seven days, but I think we'll be doing laundry.
