AAA: Venezuelans flock to invest in Miami real estate

The real estate market in Florida is booming in response to major demand from cash-rich alternative investors from Latin America, according to alternative investment advocacy group, AAA.

Boston, MA, USA, February 29, 2012 -- The real estate market in Florida is booming in response to major demand from cash-rich alternative investors from Latin America, according to alternative investment advocacy group, Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA).

AAA has responded to a report in propertywire.com, which shows that investors from Venezuela have been buying up property in Miami in droves. The Miami Association of Realtors claim that 15 per cent of all international property sales in Miami last year were to people from Venezuela, who have cash to spend and are eager to get their hands on lucrative and tangible investments.

Despite the ongoing slump in the US economy and, indeed, the Florida housing market, developers have started working again to feed the demand from the rich Latin Americans looking to buy bricks and mortar in the US state.

Jorge Perez from one of the leading developers in the region, Related Group, told Propertywire.com, “Latin America has really helped to breathe new life into our market.”

The trend for Venezuelans investing in the US housing market is thought to stem from the concerns they have about a possible forthcoming crackdown on such investments at home from leftist President Huge Chavez.

The US housing market is the winner in this scenario,” explained AAA’s analysis partner, Anthony Johnson. He added, “It’s not difficult to see why the investors are putting their cash into real estate at a time when the equity markets are far less attractive, along with several other forms of traditional investment.”

However, AAA was keen to point out that there are some investment schemes that are even closer to home, such as the forestry plantation investment schemes run by Greenwood Management in Brazil. Brazil, like Venezuela, has seen an improvement in its fortunes in recent years. As a result, the demand for charcoal or the growing steel industry is enormous and lucrative for those invested in non-native sustainable plantations.

Missing from the Presidential Debate: Long-Term Care

Two Candidates Respond to National Survey but Many Remain Silent on How to Support Older Adults and Individuals with Disabilities Who Need Care at Home.

Washington, D.C., February 26, 2012 -- Every day, over 10 million frail seniors, younger people with disabilities, and their families struggle to find and pay for long-term care to stay independent and remain at home, and the need for care is expected to grow to over 15 million Americans by 2020.

Yet, the issue of long-term care has been completely absent from this year’s presidential campaign. No questions have been asked during the debates. The candidates have not posted any views or positions on their websites, and only two candidates have responded to a national survey on their views to address this growing national challenge.

Long-term care helps older adults and individuals with disabilities manage everyday activities, such as dressing, bathing, using the bathroom, preparing meals, and taking medication.

While these home care services are cost-effective and help people stay independent and out of expensive nursing homes, they are not covered by traditional health insurance. Medicare does not cover them, and only 3% of adults have private long-term care insurance.

Medicaid offers some coverage for long term care, but individuals must spend-down and impoverish themselves to qualify - often exhausting a lifetime of savings. Waiting lists also have doubled over the past decade, with some states cutting home and community-based services to trim budgets.

As a result, over 90% of all long-term services provided today are delivered informally by more than 42.1 million family members. These caregivers often face enormous burdens, adversely affecting their health, ability to work, and financial security.

To help raise this critical issue among the presidential candidates, 15 national aging and disability organizations, including the National Council on Aging (NCOA), invited each candidate to answer five questions about their views on long-term care. The questionnaire was distributed in November to all major candidates for President, regardless of political party affiliation.

So far, only two presidential candidates-Barack Obama and Newt Gingrich-have responded to the questionnaire. The five questions and responses received to date are available at http://www.ncoa.org/LTSSsurvey.

The number of Americans needing long-term care is expected to double in the coming decade as the population ages,” said James Firman, NCOA president & CEO. “Clearly, this is an issue that cannot be ignored. FPL Engineer Shares Love of Engineering with Under-Served Youth

Juno Beach, FL, February 25, 2012 -- Florida Power & Light's Melanie Roger has a passion for her profession.

As a young girl, she dreamed of going into medicine, like her parents. It wasn't until she got to college, at the University of South Florida, that she decided to change course. Roger switched her major to engineering, hoping it would help her “stand out” among the other medical school candidates. During her course of study, she discovered this was her true love.

It taught me a different way to think and how to solve a problem using numerous methods,” Roger said. “I want to share that with others.”

As a Production Assurance Engineer at Florida Power and Light’s Lauderdale combined cycle plant, Roger enjoys sharing her enthusiasm for engineering with the youth of her community. She volunteers with a group called SECME - the Southeastern Consortium of Minorities in Engineering. It’s a national organization that seeks to prepare under-served or under-represented students for careers in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.

This month, Roger got a chance to share her passion for engineering with students from 55 schools throughout Palm Beach County. She served as a judge at the annual SECME Olympiad - a competition that’s the result of a year’s worth of study, experimentation and creativity.

This year students squared off at Santaluces High School in Boynton Beach on Feb. 11. The Olympiad theme, “Plan It, Live It, Build It” featured a wide variety of hands-on activities and competitions that included a “Brain Bowl” - a trivia-like game that pits students against the clock and one another, to answer science-related questions. The students also competed against one another to see who could design the strongest wooden bridge, the fastest “mousetrap car” (propelled by a spring through a mousetrap), and the highest-flying water bottle rocket. Other competitions included creating essays, poems, banners and posters for the event.

Roger joined several other FPL engineers as a volunteer judge. “It was so energizing to see how excited the kids were about participating in the Brain Bowl,” she said.

Roger advises students that pursuing a career in engineering can be challenging, but she says it is also very rewarding. She encourages students to feed their curiosity and never stop learning. “Perseverance always prevails,” she says.
