Seattle, United States, November 01, 2011 -- An evaluation of the economic and social benefits provided by the forests of Scotland has taken place in the form of the Forestry for People project - attracting praise from Forestry Research Associates (FRA).
The research and analysis consultancy has welcomed the release of the study, which found that the forests of Scotland have huge benefits for the local environment and many uses on a social level.
The study took the form of two extensive surveys using 1,000 people as a sample for each. Economic analysis also took place to generate a clear picture of the impact that forestry, forestry investment and the forestry industry have on Scotland as a country, and its people.
According to the study, some 13,200 people are directly or indirectly employed by the forestry or forestry products sector in Scotland, suggesting that it has a major impact on the country’s economy. Responsible forestry management even has a part to play in instilling new beliefs and behaviours in people, as they become more aware of the importance of maintaining a sustainable lifestyle.
As well as being major contributors to the economy, the study also found that Scotland's forests are visited very regularly by local people, with 37-68 million visiting in total over the past five years. Children are also active in their participation in visits to woodland and their experiences of nature are enhanced as a result.
FRA’s lead analyst, Peter Collins, said, "This study has great value in that it underlines both the financial value and the social value of forests and strengthens the argument in favour of cherishing forests through investment in projects like that run by Greenwood Management in Brazil, and other similar sustainable projects all over the world.”
FRA added that the results found in Scotland could be echoed in the developing world if enough emphasis was put on responsible forestry practices.
