Canadian green forestry investment welcomed by FRA

Forestry Research Associates (FRA) has reported that the Canadian government has announced further investment in the forestry industry of New Brunswick to help boost the local economy.

Seattle, United States, September 09, 2011 -- The Canadian government has announced further investment in the forestry industry of New Brunswick to help boost the local economy, reported Forestry Research Associates (FRA).

Joe Oliver, the Minister of Natural Resources, said the government is investing a further CA$6.1 million into the forestry industry in order to protect jobs. He explained, "Today's announcements highlight key investments in the transformation of the forest industry and reconfirm that our Government's top priority remains the economy.

"With the economic recovery still fragile, we will continue to take action to protect and create jobs in Canada, including the important forestry jobs right here in New Brunswick,” he added.

Forestry Research Associates, a US-based analysis and research consultancy, welcomed the investment, adding that the money is necessary to help protect the fragile industry during tough times.

The investment will largely be used to help paper and pulp mills in the region to take advantage of developments in clean energy generation. For example, two mills have received funding through the Pulp and Paper Green Transformation Program, which is expected the help them reduce their impact on the environment, which will benefit local communities.

"With these investments our Government is continuing to implement our plan that supports innovative change in New Brunswick's forest sector," stated Keith Ashfield, Regional Minister for New Brunswick.

The government is keen to invest in the clean energy development as they see it as the best way to safeguard the future of the industry in the region. FRA’s analysis partner, Peter Collins, said, “We welcome the news that Canada’s government is not only investing in the future of forestry, but in the future of the country’s environment by helping to reduce the impact mills have on the local environment.

It’s vital that forestry becomes 100 per cent sustainable, which also includes the energy mills used in the production process,” he added.

Local figures have lined up to welcome the new investment and the move towards a greener industry in New Brunswick.

SeatChoice Launches New Mobile App for Theatre and Gig Ticket Buyers

Leading theatre and gig ticket comparison website SeatChoice.com has created a mobile phone app for the Android platform to help theatre and music fans get ticket information on the go.

London, UK - September 09, 2011 -- Leading theatre and gig ticket comparison website SeatChoice.com has created a mobile phone app for the Android platform to help theatre and music fans get ticket information on the go.

The 'app', which is free to download from the Android Market, is linked to the massive UK Theatre Web database and helps users search for performances and concerts across the UK. The UK Theatre Web database contains details on approximately 20,000 events.

The 'app' provides information on the event dates, the cast and the venue and will also give details of STAR (Society of Ticket Agents and Retailers) outlets with theatre tickets available or contact details of the venue box office and a link to the website. Users can also leave reviews and ratings which will be seen by other app users.

To find the 'app', search for UKTW on the Android Market. Android platform smartphones include Samsung, Nexus, Sony Ericsson and HTC.

Robert Iles, founder of SeatChoice.com and UK Theatre Web commented

"We've created this free 'app' to help theatre and gig fans find information about shows, concerts and other events wherever they may be. The 'app' is built in such a way that it will even provide basic information when there's no internet connection so users should be able to find out what they need even with just a mobile signal. More and more people are using their mobile phones to find information and this new service will help theatre and music fans find out what they need simply and quickly."

The SeatChoice.com website helps users to compare and purchase tickets to shows and concerts across the UK.

UKTW is behind the 'What’s-On' content for several established theatre websites including http://www.arts-archive.co.uk where users can find information for theatre productions dating back to 1997. Eventually this information will also be accessible directly from the new ‘app’. UK Theatre Web’s database is seen by around 500,000 users every month.

FPL powers energy education, jobs for South Florida

With the nation’s unemployment numbers looming large, South Florida has been hit especially hard. But bright futures await students in FPL’s cooperative energy education programs at Miami Dade College and Indian River State College.

Juno Beach, FL, September 08, 2011 -- With the nation’s unemployment numbers looming large, South Florida has been hit especially hard. But bright futures await students in FPL’s cooperative energy education programs at Miami Dade College and Indian River State College.

Graduating their fourth classes this year, the Clean Energy Institute at MDC and the Power Plant Technology Institute at IRSC are innovative partnerships between the schools, FPL and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in response to the workforce needs of the energy industry.

The programs prepare individuals for high-skill, high-wage jobs. After two years of training, the graduates earn an associate in science degree and job offers from FPL, one of the state’s largest employers. One of these graduates is Marcos Rodriguez, who, at age 20, is about to begin a career as a nuclear technician at FPL’s Turkey Point Nuclear Plant. Below is his story.

When I was a junior in high school at Miami Lakes Educational Center, I would often dream about my future.

At first, I wanted to be an automobile service technician, like my Dad. He was always working with cars and while I was growing up I would help him. I've just always had a love for being a mechanic. But even more than that, I was intrigued by the physics behind the working components - learning how things work and why.

That’s when I started thinking what else I could do with the rest of my life. My cousin works at the Turkey Point Nuclear Plant and told me about a nuclear apprentice program at Miami Dade College’s Clean Energy Institute. It’s a partnership between MDC and Florida Power & Light. You receive extensive training and, once you graduate, you're eligible for jobs with an average starting salary of $55,000 to $57,000.

I was excited about the opportunity, and with my cousin’s encouragement I signed up for the program at MDC’s Homestead campus. This ended up being a life changing experience.

The program provided me with an internship at the nuclear plant. For two years I got a first-hand experience working at the plant and learning the equipment - and I fell in love with it.

It’s a great working environment. Everyone at the plant is really friendly, and as an intern, I have a lot of mentors there and they are eager to teach and share their knowledge.

Education has turned my life around and I now I am excited about my future. Despite the rough economy, I know we'll have to produce more electricity in the future when the market gets back to normal. I feel honored to be a part of that.

Marcos Rodriguez is one of 22 students who graduated from Miami Dade College’s Clean Energy Institute this summer. To learn more about the program, visit: http://www.fpl.com/community/learning/workplace.shtml or check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=THJYuTcHe-Y&feature=uploademail. New Research Suggests Swing Towards Alternative Investments

Research consultants Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA) have announced that new figures showing a major swing towards alternative assets is a positive indicator for the industry as a whole.

Boston, MA, USA, September 07, 2011 -- Research consultants Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA) have announced that new figures showing a major swing towards alternative assets is a positive indicator for the industry as a whole.

Cogent Research has found that three quarters of retail financial advisers have steered their clients towards alternatives, with each client having an average of 11 per cent of their portfolios invested in non-traditional assets.

These alternative assets can include anything from hedge funds, and private equity, to forestry and real estate. AAA welcomes the news that 80 per cent of those questioned said that diversifying their portfolios was the main reason behind their decision to opt for alternatives, and the same number also said alternatives help them to reduce the risk held in their portfolios.

One respondent, Erin Scannell of Johnson Scannel, explained that the clients themselves are becoming increasingly interested in alternative investments: “Most of our clients are retired and more of them seem anxious with the general stock market so they are using more and more alternatives.”

AAA’s analysis partner, Anthony Johnson, said that it was this move towards the investors themselves putting pressure on their fund managers to opt for alternative asset classes over traditional assets that is the most positive sign. He explained, “As an alternative investment advocacy group, we welcome the results of this study, which shows that retail financial advisers and their clients are moving more of their money into non-traditional assets.”

AAA supports investment in ethical projects that also offer portfolio diversification, such as the sustainable forestry projects run in Brazil by firms like Greenwood Management. Mr Johnson said, “When looking at alternative assets, it’s vital to consider social and ecological factors and ensure that the project is responsible from both these angles.”

Some 22 per cent of the report’s respondents said they do not include alternatives in their portfolios. However, almost half of these said that this was because they lacked understanding of the assets and options available to them.

Investors look to wine and art, says AAA

Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA) has commented on news that investors are turning to some highly unusual assets in response to a prolonged period of stock market volatility.

Boston, MA, USA, September 03, 2011 -- Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA) has commented on news that investors are turning to some highly unusual assets in response to a prolonged period of stock market volatility.

The alternative investment advocacy group welcomed the report from thisismoney.co.uk that examined the growing trend for investment in assets like fine wines, stamps, collectibles, books, antiques and art.

Anthony Johnson, an analysis partner at AAA, said, “This is a reflection of the fact that people are on the look out for a place to put their cash that will ensure it won't disappear if the bottom falls out of the equity markets.

Diversification is a key request for both individual and institutional investors looking to reduce risk these days and these more unusual assets are proving more affordable than more ‘traditional’ alternatives, such as gold,” he added.

The art world claims it has benefited hugely from the trend for more investment in alternatives, with the market for individual pieces reaching record levels, while art funds also go from strength to strength. However, minimum investments for some of the most popular art funds tend to be expensive – often starting at tens of thousands of dollars. Cheaper alternatives include wine, which can offer an attractive prospect, with cases of fine wines and top vintages available for as little as $1,600. Data from Morningstar show that $32,600 invested in fine wine in 2005 would be worth $114,200 today. This compares very keenly to the stock markets, where the rate of return for the same period would have averaged at just 2.9 per cent.

Figures like this show that alternatives are a valid money-making option in today’s economic climate – and the more volatile the stock markets become, the higher the values of these alternative assets will climb,” added Mr Johnson.

AAA supports all alternative investments, but is especially keen to focus on encouraging investment in emerging markets through impact investing or investing in forestry and other ecologically and socially responsible asset classes. “Investment in forestry through firms like Greenwood Management, which operates in Brazil, help to bring foreign investment to emerging economies and helps to safeguard the forestry industry for future generations," said Mr Johnson.

FRA backs positive report on forestry investment options

A recent article on the advantages of investing in forestry, published in Farming Magazine and in the Irish Independent newspaper, has been welcomed by Forestry Research Associates (FRA).

Seattle, United States, September 03, 2011 -- A recent article on the advantages of investing in forestry, published in Farming Magazine and in the Irish Independent newspaper, has been welcomed by Forestry Research Associates (FRA).

The analysis and research consultancy said it backs this positive view of forestry as an investment option. The article explained that direct investment in forested land – either through a company that runs plantations or through buying and planting up an area of land independently, is a good way to develop a generous pension fund for the future.

The article, written by Joe Barry, said that the trees typically generate an annual investment return of between five and six per cent, which is a solid return without the risk involved with investing in stock markets. Barry explains that if the price of timber falls at the time trees reach maturity and can be sold, land owners or investors can simply opt to sit tight and wait until the market improves, which – points out Mr Barry – it eventually always does.

FRA’s analysis partner, Peter Collins, said, “The financial markets are not offering investors much reason for confidence at the moment, and investing in forestry is a truly risk-averse option for those who are keen to protect their money from any further stock-market crashes.”

FRA claims that an increasing number of affluent, ethically responsible investors are looking into ways to spread the risk in their portfolios while investing in projects that are both ecologically and socially responsible. The consultancy highlights forestry investment opportunities in emerging economies like Brazil, through firms like Greenwood Management, which offer people the chance to invest in plots of land that are being planted up with non-native tree crops, such as eucalyptus and teak.

Mr Barry claims there is always a market for timber, and with major economic growth in Asia and in Brazil, now is a good time to invest money in the Latin American country, according to FRA. “Brazilian forestry is a good bet in our opinion, not least because the steel industry is desperate for sustainably produced charcoal to help prepare infrastructure for the upcoming World Cups and Olympic events," said Peter Collins.
