FRA states that it hopes Paragominas's methods catch on

News that the town of Paragominas in Brazil is being hailed as a new 'Green City', after once being one of the most deforested regions of the Amazon, has been welcomed by Forestry Research Associates (FRA).

Seattle, United States, December 20, 2011 -- News that the town of Paragominas in Brazil is being hailed as a new 'Green City', after once being one of the most deforested regions of the Amazon, has been welcomed by Forestry Research Associates (FRA).

Just three years ago the forest surrounding the city was ravaged by deforestation and the air lay heavy with smoke and fumes from the fires that raged in order to clear land for cattle grazing. FRA, a research and analysis consultancy specialising in forestry investment and sustainability matters, claims that the region is a model of what sustainability can do for the Amazon region.

FRA says that things really changed in the city after the people living there become convinced, thanks to efforts from the government, that the forests were more valuable while they were standing, than when they were turned into wood products.

The government of the country helped to create this sense of value after launching embargoes against the counties that performed the worst with regard to deforestation. “this left the people of Paragominas very little choice but to find a way to make sure their forestry management practices made sense over the long term through sustainability,” explained FRA’s analysis partner, Peter Collins.

Mayor Adnan Demachki go behind the changes, explaining to the San Francisco Chronicle: "Our city was on the government's 'black list. There was no way out other than the new path we had chosen."

The secret to the changes is the use of less land while increasing production. Sustainable forestry management methods are central to this, added FRA, which promotes such methods including the planting of non-native species that can offer an alternative to using wood from native trees for the production of coal, pulpwood and other timber products.

Mr Collins concluded, “we hope that the methods used by those in Paragominas continue to spread across the Amazon regions, safeguarding the future of the forestry industry and the forests for generation to come.”

London, UK, December 20, 2011 -- TechNavio today launched its report Global Biopsy Devices Market 2010-2014 based on an in-depth study covering the Americas, the EMEA and APAC regions. The report aids decision makers’ understanding of the present and future landscape of the Global Biopsy Devices market.

- Revenue increased to US $ 1,556 million, compared to US $ 980 million in the first nine months of 2010.

- Operating profit increased to US $ 487 million, compared to US $ 126 million in the first nine months of 2010.

- Adjusted EBITDA grew to US $ 560 million, compared to US $ 205 million in the first nine months of 2010.

- Net profit amounted to US $ 289 million, compared to US $ 12 million in the first nine months of 2010.

Moscow, Russia - December 15, 2011 -- URALCHEM Holding P.L.C. (hereinafter URALCHEM Holding or the Company), a Cypriot holding company of the URALCHEM Group (hereinafter called the Group), one of the largest producers of nitrogen and phosphate fertilisers in Russia, announced its unaudited IFRS financial results for the first nine months of 2011 ending 30 September 2011.

Dmitry Konyaev, CEO of URALCHEM, OJSC (part of the Group), commented on the results for the first nine months of 2011: "Preliminary data suggest that 2011 will be a very successful year for our company. Both stable demand for fertilizers in Russia and abroad and favourable price conditions have allowed us to increase sales and show strong financial results in the first nine months of 2011."

Financial Results

Revenue in the first nine months of 2011 grew to US $ 1,556 million, compared to US $ 980 million in the first nine months of 2010. Operating profit amounted to US $ 487 million, or 31% of the revenue, compared with operating profit of US $ 126 million, or 13% of the revenue in the first nine months of 2010.

In the first nine months of 2011 net profit amounted to US $ 289 million, compared with US $ 12 million in the same period in 2010.

In the first nine months of 2011 adjusted EBITDA reached US $ 560 million compared to US $ 205 million for the same period last year, an increase of 173%. Adjusted EBITDA margin in the first nine months of 2011 comprised 36% of revenue, compared with 21% of revenue in the first nine months of 2010.

Markets

During the first nine months of 2011, the volume of export sales increased by nearly 74%, reaching US $ 1,023 million compared to US $ 589 million in the first nine months of 2010. During the first nine months of 2011 revenues from sales to the domestic market amounted to US $ 339 million, compared with US $ 243 million in the first nine months of 2010.

The dynamics of the urea market during January - September 2011 were significantly different from the corresponding period in 2010. The traditional market weakening in the first quarter gave way to sharp price increases that lasted throughout the second quarter and amounted to almost $ 200 / t. Then, after a brief downward correction, prices restored and stabilized within the limits of $ 480 - $ 500 / t FOB Port of Yuzhny. The main reason for the sharp rise in prices was the imbalance between limited supply and strong demand from the markets in Asia, Latin America and Africa.

The ammonium nitrate market largely repeated the market dynamics of urea during the first half of the year. However, in the third quarter, influenced by lower demand in all major markets, prices for ammonium nitrate significantly decreased - down to the level of the beginning of the year. During August - September marked price fluctuated within $ 310 - $ 330 / t FOB CIS, reflecting market participants' uncertainty concerning of the world economic outlook.

Since the beginning of 2011, the global market of phosphorus fertilisers has shown a stable shortage, which is related to decrease in supply from major sources. Since the beginning of 2011, there was a steady rise in prices for phosphate fertilisers; the prices in September 2011 exceed the prices in the same period last year by 33%.

Supported by high prices for nitrogen, phosphate and potash fertilisers, the prices for NPK fertilisers grew throughout the first nine months of the year.

Sales

Due to high demand for fertilisers both in Russia and abroad, the volume of sales of the Group in the first nine months of 2011 increased by 6% compared to the same period in 2010 and totalled 3.815 million tons of products. Sales of "other chemicals" increased by 76% mainly due to increased sales of ammonium nitrate for industrial use. The sales volume of urea increased by 18%. Sales of ammonia decreased by 8% due to the increase of the share of dry products.

Financial Situation

Due to increased revenue, cash generated from operations (before tax and interest) in the first nine months of 2011 amounted to US $ 330 million compared to US $ 64 million in the same period last year.

On September 30 2011 the Company's net debt amounted to US $ 1129 million. The weighted average interest rate in the loan portfolio during the first nine months of 2011 comprised 7.9% per annum compared to 9.6% in the same period last year. The net debt/EBITDA ratio is 1.7. By the end of the year 2011 the Company plans to reduce the net debt to US $ 1000 million thereby reducing the net debt/EBITDA ratio to less than 1.5.

Laura Warburton Now a Light Space & Time Featured Artist

Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery announced today that Canadian abstract artist, Laura Warburton was chosen for the Gallery's most recent Artist Showcase.

Jupiter, Florida - December 15, 2011 -- Light Space & Time Online Art Gallery announced today that Canadian abstract artist, Laura Warburton was chosen for the Gallery's most recent Artist Showcase. Laura is a Toronto, Canada based artist who creates art through the use of color, texture and imagination. Her edict is that a composition is merely a vague idea, not fully envisioned, until the piece itself emerges with the artist's assistance. Her work reflects movement across or through the canvas. Whether the composition is brushed, sprayed, carved, splattered, scraped or poured, the use of texture, mediums and abstraction provides an organic feel that encourages the viewer to linger and rove across the canvas.

After 20+ dynamic years in the medical field, she decided to embrace her creative side and took the leap into the role of a full time artist. Laura had been painting part time since the mid 2000’s and the more that she painted, she could feel the benefits of this creative outlet within her soul. Laura states that “serendipitously my formal education in psychology/human sciences fields has been a great accompaniment to my work as an artist via the use and understanding of color, flow, visual perception and human personality.”

Laura goes on to further state that “brushing, carving, scraping and pouring various materials, gels and mediums on canvas aids in creating an organic textured feel that hopefully captures and holds the viewer’s eye. Painting and paintings are emotional to me. I believe that when you walk into a room and you notice the art on the walls... and you really want to” look” at it... then you are in front of a great a piece of art.”

Laura Warburton has an undergraduate degree in Psychology from the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada and is a member of CARFAC: Canadian Artists Representation. Her colorful and vibrant website can be found at http://www.laurawarburton.com.

AAA urges Investors to read New Book on Impact Investing

Investors have been encouraged to read Impact Investing: Transforming How We Make Money While Making A Difference by Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA) in order to gain a wider understanding of impact investing.

Boston, MA, USA, December 15, 2011 -- Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA) urges investors to read Jed Emerson and Antony Bugg-Levine’s new book on impact investing.

Impact Investing: Transforming How We Make Money While Making A Difference, takes an interesting look at how investments can help to improve the world and the lives of those living in the developing world, claims AAA.

The alternative investment advocacy group, which also supports investment in social enterprises and environmentally responsible projects, claims the book is a useful guide for those interested in making a difference through their financial power.

AAA’s analysis partner, Anthony Johnson, stated, “Impact investing is growing in popularity, largely as a response to the public disenchantment with the traditional financial markets.”

He added, “The ideal solution is an alternative investment in a project that has a low correlation with the stock market and can offer the investor peace of mind. Impact investing is not just about avoiding unethical investments, but actively investing in projects that are intended to help fund social and environmental projects.”

Mr Emerson explained the thinking behind publishing the book: “It’s important to understand that while the financial markets have gone sideways, not all investing practices the same.”

He also told Dowser.org: “Impact investing is often deep, long-term investing which can have less volatility and more consistent returns compared to mainstream investing approaches. So, the currents markets have actually brought more attention to impact investing as an alternative option.”

AAA is keen to spread the word that impact investing is a new alternative to equities or even other alternative asset classes like real estate. AAA also supports investment in forestry, which can help to promote sustainability and protect some of the world’s most valuable forests from deforestation. The plantation projects being carried out by Greenwood Management in Brazil, for example, are a good example of an investment scheme that can help protect forests in developing countries.

IAPAM Announces Position Statement on Using hCG for Weight Loss

The IAPAM is committed to educating physicians in the industry’s best practices for hCG for weight loss. In support of this commitment, the IAPAM has prepared a position statement on safely using hCG for Weight Loss.

Las Vegas, Nevada - December 14, 2011 -- The IAPAM is committed to educating physicians in the industry’s best practices for hCG for weight loss. In support of this commitment, the IAPAM has prepared a position statement (http://www.iapam.com/hcg-for-weight-loss.html) on safely using hCG for Weight Loss. In summary:

- The IAPAM agrees with the FDA regarding homeopathic hCG. The IAPAM supports the FDA/FTC’s removal of homeopathic hCG from the market. Homeopathic hCG is unproven and unsafe, and was never used for weight loss in the original Dr. Simeons program for weight loss (http://www.iapam.com/dr-simeons-pounds-and-inches-manuscript.html).

- hCG on its own is not effective for weight loss. What is required is a strict protocol, which includes: the use of prescription hCG, diet and patient counseling in order for hCG to be successful for weight loss. The IAPAM has found that physician directed hCG weight loss programs are very successful. Over 15,000 patients have safely and successfully lost weight by working with physicians who follow the IAPAM hCG for Weight Loss Protocol.

- The IAPAM does not endorse prescribing hCG for weight loss unless the physician has been properly trained, evaluates every patient, and reviews a comprehensive medical history along with current lab testing.

- Most existing hCG studies are flawed. The IAPAM has found that the few studies which have found that hCG offers no benefit over placebo for weight loss, do not always follow the Simeons Protocol precisely.

The IAPAM Agrees with the FDA’s Position in Homeopathic hCG

The IAPAM (http://www.iapam.com) is in total agreement with the FDA’s ban on homeopathic hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin).

The IAPAM and Ilisa Bernstein of the FDA agree that, homeopathic “hCG products, marketed over-the-counter, are unproven to help with weight loss and are potentially dangerous even if taken as directed, and a very low calorie diet should only be used under proper medical supervision.”

It is unsafe for a person to undertake a 500 calorie a day diet without the direct supervision of a physician. The original Simeons hCG protocol did not use or envision homeopathic hCG. Homeopathic hCG is unproven and unsafe, and these products contain little or no hCG,” emphasizes Jeff Russell, Executive Director of the IAPAM.

15,000 Patients have Safely and Successfully Lost Weight on the IAPAM’s hCG Protocol

Mr. Russell further emphasizes that, “hCG is only one part of an hCG program. The key to successful weight loss is: to use pharmaceutical grade hCG, to follow a strict diet and maintenance protocol, and to be under the direct supervision of a physician. A full patient medical history and complete lab testing is needed prior to any patient going on the hCG program. Using hCG alone will not result in safe, long term weight loss.”

Over 15,000 patients have safely and successfully lost weight under physician supervision and on the IAPAM’s hCG Protocol (http://www.hcgtraining.com).

Inconsistencies in Existing hCG Studies

Finally, in reviewing many of the studies that have been completed since the 1960s, the IAPAM has found that many of these trials did not follow the Simeons Protocol exactly. Physicians, who have reviewed the studies, have commented that they “were small studies and not rigorously controlled.” Moreover, many of “the studies done on hCG in the literature were not undertaken by physicians trained on the hCG diet,” and/or the “studies did not look at some of the touted benefits of hCG, such as how people feel on the diet, how and where they lose weight, and the success rates of people taking hCG.”

Ultimately, patients will have safe and effective weight loss, if under the supervision of a properly trained physician, expert in the use of pharmaceutical hCG for weight loss.

For a copy of the IAPAM’s Position Statement on hCG for Weight Loss go to http://www.iapam.com/hcg-for-weight-loss.html. Zevrix Updates LinkOptimizer for InDesign: Adds Color Management Controls

Zevrix Solutions announces LinkOptimizer 4.6.8, a feature update to its popular workflow automation solution for Adobe InDesign. Awarded 4 out of 5 starts by Computer Arts magazine, LinkOptimizer allows to reduce InDesign job size and speed up processing by eliminating excess image data, performing essential image adjustments, converting image formats and more. The new version lets users control profile inclusion policy of color-managed images and addresses some stability and reliability issues.

Toronto (ON), Canada - December 14, 2011 -- Zevrix Solutions today announces the release of LinkOptimizer 4.6.8, a feature update to its popular workflow automation solution for Adobe InDesign. Awarded 4 out of 5 starts by Computer Arts magazine, LinkOptimizer automates complex image manipulation tasks allowing to significantly reduce the size of InDesign job, save processing time and reduce production costs.

The new version lets users control the ICC profile inclusion policy of color-managed images during processing, which is especially useful for workflows that require images to be saved without color profiles embedded.

"LinkOptimizer makes me extremely happy", says Nynke Tiekstra, the owner of design studio ColtsfootMedia in Friesland, Netherlands, "It converted 10000 images in a 1800 pages project saving us at least 40 hours work, and it proved to be 100% accurate."

LinkOptimizer works automatically with Adobe Photoshop to eliminate the excess image data of InDesign links, perform essential image adjustments and convert image formats. For example, with just a click of a button users can:

-scale and crop images to match their dimensions in InDesign,
-change their resolution to 300 ppi,
-convert all RGB images to CMYK,
-resave all JPEG images as TIFF,
-run a Photoshop Action on each image.

Worksite Training a Priority in New Economy

AlphaStaff takes closer look at programs managers need in New Year.

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. - December 14, 2011 -- Worksite training is a must for companies wanting to improve administrative efficiency and ensure compliance. Not only can the right worksite training reduce costly HR-related litigation, it can help revitalize a company’s workplace culture and organization as a whole.

With the New Year right around the corner, AlphaStaff Group, Inc. (“AlphaStaff”), one of the nation’s largest professional employer organizations (PEO), has taken a look at training programs by area and offers the following advice:

1. Anti-harassment and diversity training -Diversity training must be all-inclusive, not limited to supervisors and managers but should extend to every employee in the organization. This is critical because it gives everyone the tools to identify, report and stop discrimination and also demonstrates that the employer is committed to fairness. Lastly, it can also prevent costly litigation should it occur and help bolster an organization’s legal defense. In terms of potential savings and improved productivity, diversity training is perhaps the most important component in today’s overall training equation.

2. Employee life cycle training -Training for managers as it relates to hiring, the employment stage and termination should have a clear focus and can be done in multiple sessions or one long session and should be followed with a series of refresher courses, as this can help limit potential legal action and protect employers when suits are filed.

a. Hiring -Managers should be informed about what can and cannot be asked in interviews; issues related to background checks and discrimination should be fully examined.

b. Employment stage -Managers should be trained on the value of coaching versus counseling; they should be informed about language to avoid, the importance of encouragement, and the legal requirements related to asking employees to work overtime. Ultimately, good training in this area can help to transform an organization’s culture, improving productivity.

c. Termination -Managers must be trained on the correct procedures involved in every state of the process. For instance they must review and understand the need for thorough documentation and the importance of communication. Smaller, specific details must be discussed in training as well, such as the fact that every termination meeting should include at least two management level employees, the need for security should be evaluated, and IT issues regarding access to email and files must be anticipated. Utilizing a progressive discipline process can limit uncomfortable separation meetings, as well as provide vital support for litigation/unemployment hearings.

d. Overtime - Overtime has become a hot employment topic. The bottom line for employers is –they must pay employees if they work the time. The Department of Labor requires that employees covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) must receive overtime pay for hours worked in excess of 40 in a workweek of at least one and one-half times their regular rates of pay; however there are some exceptions to this rule. Although this is clearly defined, employers can institute a policy that overtime must be authorized and employees may be disciplined for working unauthorized overtime but they must be paid for the time worked. Employees should not work off the clock and managers should not suggest it.

3. FMLA/ADA/Workers' compensation training -Good training can help avoid litigation and detect fraud, contributing to a stronger bottom line for employers. FMLA and ADA are difficult to navigate but it is vital for organizations to understand and recognize the signs when an employee is eligible for these protections. When it comes to workers’ compensation, HR leaders face significant challenges as they navigate a host of complex issues. Managers should be trained on key issues such as fraud detection, the proper process for filing claims and it will also make them more likely to follow the rules.

4. Conflict resolution training -This is an immediate priority -for the first time there are four different generations working side-by-side in the workplace. Role play is one of the best and most effective ways to act out situations and prepare managers in the event they should have to deal with various conflicts in the workplace. When handling an employee complaint, managers should: listen politely, allow the employee the chance to be heard, acknowledge the employee’s feelings, maintain confidentiality to the extent that they can, contact HR immediately, follow up with the employee using HR’s instructions and be sure to monitor the worksite to make sure the behavior is not recurring. Managers should not: agree with the employee, investigate/discuss the matter with other employees, promise to fix the problem, ignore the complaint, treat employees differently or retaliate. Mutual respect and apologizing also goes a long way in conflict resolution. A manage r's role in preventing and resolving conflict is to set the tone for a respectful workplace, recognize harassment and discrimination, and report those behaviors.

When it comes to worksite training, if not implemented correctly, the costs associated are great not just in dollars but in morale and productivity. By being proactive in their approach to training, communication and policies, employers can truly make their managers better prepared and their employees feel protected and supported.
