AAA welcomes news that Investors are interested in Tasmania Plantations

AAA, an alternative investment advocacy group, has announced that it is welcoming the news of potential buyers for plantations owned by a collapsed forestry firm in Tasmania.

Boston, MA, USA, October 12, 2012 -- Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA), an alternative investment advocacy group, has announced that it is welcoming the news of potential buyers for plantations owned by a collapsed forestry firm in Tasmania.

The 100,000 hectares of plantation space is thought to still be managed by the insolvent Tasmanian firm, called Gunns. The firm entered administration in late September and potential buyers for the plantation land, which could be very lucrative and attractive to investors, are being looked into by receiver KordaMentha.

There is already interest from clients of the New Forests investment fund in Sydney, manager David Brand has claimed. Brand stated that the price of the plantation land is still unclear, however, with prices ranging from a few hundreds Australian dollars to as much as A$8,0000 per hectare being mentioned.

He added that the value of the plantation that will be manageable under the new certification from the forestry Stewardship Council, which shows that the plantations are managed sustainably.

AAA's analysis partner, Anthony Johnson, said that the news that FSC-certified plantations are more attractive and possibly more valuable than forests that are not managed sustainably is great news for the environment. "Not only is it good news from an environmental perspective, but it also means that sustainable management may become increasingly popular in countries like Brazil, where the future of the local communities can rely on the industry."

The government of Tasmania is, in the meantime, hoping that an investor from china may pay up to A$2.3 billion for the pulp mill that was owned by Gunns.

The popularity of sustainable forestry as an alternative investment choice is growing all the time, claims AAA, which supports plantation projects like the ones operated by Greenwood Management in Brazil. These projects provide alternative timber products to those produced using native forests, which are vulnerable and extremely valuable from a ecological point of view.

Safeguarding Sustainable Forestry is Vital, claims FRA

A recent article in The Guardian's blog by Peter Holmgren, director general for the Center for International Forestry Research, has been warmly welcomed by FRA for providing some useful ideas on how we can further promote sustainable forestry.

Seattle, United States, October 11, 2012 -- A recent article in The Guardian's blog by Peter Holmgren, director general for the Center for International Forestry Research, has been warmly welcomed by Forestry Research Associates for providing some useful ideas on how we can further promote sustainable forestry.

Mr Holmgren cited the results of a study by his organization, which recently found that people living near forests rely on forest income for a fifth of their total household income, on average. "This research illustrate how incredibly important the forestry industry is for those living in these regions," explained FRA's analysis partner, Peter Collins.

He added, "Holmgren points out how forestry provides so much for so many people and that safeguarding its future is vital for communities all over the world, but especially in developing countries."

Forestry as a means of reduce climate change through carbon absorption is now very much in the public consciousness. Carbon trading means that wealthy, industrial countries can pay developing countries with large amounts of forestry land to keep their forests standing to offset the impact of their industrial practices. In addition, Mr Collins and Mr Holmgren both point out that forestry is not disconnected from other industries. Holmgren explained to Guardian readers: "Forestry is not an isolated sector disconnected from the world beyond the trees. For local people, the forest is a source of renewable energy, food and livelihoods."

Holmgren claims that there is a strong link between forestry and food security and that this, alone is a good reason to keep forests standing.

FRA claims that investing in sustainable plantations projects in countries like Brazil, that have large amounts of vulnerable natural forests, can help reduce deforestation. Mr Collins concluded: "Projects like the eucalyptus and teak plantations run by Greenwood Management in Brazil and Canada are lucrative choices for alternative investors, while being an ethical choice for those who want to safeguard the future of forestry."

AAA Welcomes Oxfam's First Foray into Impact Investing

UK-based charitable organization, Oxfam, is moving into the world of social investment with a loan worth some £1 million to a Mongolian business that specialises in machinery leasing. The move has been welcomed by AAA as further indication that social impact investment can benefit communities all over the world.

Boston, MA, USA, October 11, 2012 -- UK-based charitable organization, Oxfam, is moving into the world of social investment with a loan worth some £1 million to a Mongolian business that specialises in machinery leasing. The move has been welcomed by Alternative Asset Analysis as further indication that social impact investment can benefit communities all over the world.

The loan is being offered through Oxfam's Small Enterprise Impact Investing Fund, which it has set up with Swiss microfinance specialist Symbiotics and the City of London Corporation.

The response to the news of the loan has been interesting and has prompted investment experts to take the growth of impact investing seriously. As more and more charities move into the commercial sector by funding social projects and businesses that can benefit wide sections of society in developing countries, they are highlighting this type of investment.

Impact investing is growing in popularity among regular investors who are looking to make healthy returns over the medium to long term, while doing their bit to help vulnerable communities or reduce climate change.

AAA advocates many types of alternative investment, but focuses its support on ethical projects like those backed by impact investing. "Helping people to work their way out of poverty and to create jobs and opportunities for large number of people within a community is an extremely productive use of an investor's wealth," claimed Anthony Johnson, AAA's analyst partner. AAA claims that a growing number of investors are now looking for ethical choices when deciding where to invest their cash, after being left with a bad taste in their mouths after the banking crisis.

Barbara Stocking of Oxfam told the Financial Times that it hoped its decision to invest in a socially responsible project will encourage other investors to do the same. "We are determined to prove to the investment industry that its scale and influence means it could play a significant role in eradicating poverty."

Santa Cruz Artist Mary Karlton Awarded First Prize in California Pomegranate Festival Art Exhibit

Santa Cruz artist, Mary Karlton, was awarded first prize for her painting entitled "How Are You M'Lord?" by the Madera County Arts Council's Celebrate Agriculture with the Arts juried art exhibition, Pomegranate Festival category. The annual art exhibit is currently being held at the Circle Gallery in Madera.

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - October 11, 2012 -- Santa Cruz artist, Mary Karlton, was awarded first prize for her painting entitled "How Are You M'Lord?" by the Madera County Arts Council's Celebrate Agriculture with the Arts juried art exhibition, Pomegranate Festival category. The annual art exhibit is currently being held at the Circle Gallery in Madera. According to 2012 exhibition judge Jerome Grimmer, renowned painter and art educator, Ms. Karlton's painting displays "great use of the elements and principles of design" and "brings an awareness that helps us see things differently."

On display are two of Ms. Karlton's figurative paintings from her "Pomegranate Portrait" Series, both of which proved extremely popular on the night of the gallery's opening reception. Ms. Karlton's piece, "How Are You M'Lord?" was especially admired and was awarded first prize for its vibrant celebration of the pomegranate. The pomegranate not only holds special significance to the agricultural community of Madera, it has also been imbued with deep symbolic and mystical significance by cultures all over the world since ancient times. With its abundant seeds and sweet ruby red juice, this fruit symbolizes fertility, prosperity, royalty, and marriage.

Ms. Karlton's painting is an homage to the late Frank Snell of Santa Cruz, medical professional in the US Army who served in Vietnam, educator, world traveler, and benefactor. The pomegranate held special significance to Mr. Snell as well, as he had had hoped to publish a book about his life experiences which he planned to call "The Pomegranate." The project was cut short by his untimely death. Ms. Karlton's portrait of Frank is the keystone piece for her ongoing "Pomegranate Portrait" series of bright and lively portraits of individuals from all walks of life and diverse ethnic backgrounds.

Also on display at the Circle Gallery is Ms. Karlton's painting entitled Kynthia, which, in a similar style, features a sleeping young female figure that represents the Greek goddess, Artemis, or Kynthia, holding a pomegranate in her hand and dreaming of her lover, symbolized by a stag. These works as well as many others will be on display at the Circle Gallery until November 17. For more information about Celebrate Agriculture with the Arts and the Madera County Arts Council, visit http://www.maderaarts.org/?page_id=334.

About Mary Karlton
Mary Karlton studied painting and printmaking in Chicago, San Francisco, and Santa Fe. Her style is eclectic with highly textured works that combine elements of collage, photography, and abstraction. Her work has been included in a wide array of exhibitions in Northern and Southern California, including various books, galleries, and wine labels.

Recently, her acrylic painting "Anima," a timeless rendering of the female archetype, was honored by placing in the Top 5 from more than 700 submissions for the Light, Space, and Time Gallery's juried 2012 Figurative Art Competition.

Mary lives and paints in the scenic coastal town of Santa Cruz, CA with her husband, musician and photographer Peter Sterbach. To learn more about Mary Karlton or to view her online gallery of artwork, please visit http://www.marykarlton.com.

About Madera County Arts Council's Annual Celebrate Agriculture with the Arts Showing
Originally funded by a grant from the California Arts Council, Celebrate Agriculture with the Arts has been a tradition and source of local pride in Madera County for nearly 20 years. Though it has since lost its government funding, various donors and volunteers have come through to keep the event moving forward year by year. 2012 saw the introduction of a Pomegranate Festival category to honor one of the key crops in the region, as well as the first ever photography section entitled Celebrating Agriculture... the Human Factor. Despite its initial financial setbacks, more than one member of the Madera County Arts Council has voiced the opinion that 2012 is Celebrate Agriculture with the Arts' best year yet.

T5 Expands to Oregon with New Data Center Project in Hillsboro

New Construction to Begin on the State's First, Purpose-built, Wholesale Data Center Scheduled for Completion in 2013.

Portland, OR, USA (October 11, 2012) -- Atlanta-based T5 Data Centers, a leading data center owner and operator supporting enterprise and wholesale data users, today announced its expansion into the Pacific Northwest with a new project, T5@Portland. T5 has acquired a 15-acre parcel of land in Hillsboro, Oregon, and is finalizing design for construction of a 200,000 square-foot, LEED-certified data center facility. Once completed, the project will be the only purpose-built, ground-up wholesale data center in the state of Oregon.

Construction of the new T5@Portland facility is scheduled to begin in early 2013, with customer ready data halls delivered in early fall 2013. The data center design is optimized to take into account the cool climate, thereby reducing the amount of power and water used to operate the facility. The center will include high-efficiency, indirect evaporative cooling with custom air handlers.

"The Pacific Northwest is a well-established destination for enterprise users looking for safe, efficient data center solutions" said Pete Marin, President of T5. "Hillsboro offers the best combination of low taxes, low power costs, a reliable infrastructure and easy access for out-of-region companies. We anticipate the T5@Portland data center to be a showcase for responsible development, and will demonstrate to customers that we can design and engineer to embrace energy efficiencies while continuing to offer our clients the resiliency and uptime they require."

As a purpose-built building, the data center also will have a hardened building shell that exceeds all seismic requirements, multiple generators for power redundancy, as well as redundant power feeds from the utility substation. Ultimately, the data center will deliver 12.25 MW of critical power with a power density up to 200 watts-per-square-foot. The T5@Portland data center will also include an on-site office and support space, as well as 24/7 monitoring of operations. Fiber connectivity is available from a dozen independent service providers, and there are three transpacific landing stations situated in Hillsboro.

T5 Data Centers is aggressively expanding its operations to meet growing customer demand. In addition to T5@Portland, T5 offers wholesale and/or enterprise data center space in the Dallas, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Charlotte markets.

Michigan's Fall Colors Are Spectacular from a Hot Air Balloon

There's no better way to see Michigan's Fall Colors than from a hot air balloon. Michigan balloonists offer a stunning platform from which to enjoy this once a year feast for the eyes.

Plymouth, MI (October 9, 2012) -- "Michigan fall colors are spectacular flying OVER tree tops in a hot air balloon," says Scott Lorenz, President and Chief Pilot of Westwind Balloon Company of Plymouth, Michigan (http://www.PureMichiganBalloon.com).

"The palate of colors just takes your breath away," says Lorenz "I love taking photos from the balloon especially when we fly over Island Lake State Park, it's fabulous, it's ten times better than driving. People just have no idea how pretty it is until they get above it."

"Want to get a preview of a flight?" asks Lorenz, "I put together of some of our fall color flights. The views are incredible as we glide over canopy of trees. There's no better way to enjoy Michigan's fall colors than from a hot air balloon." Check it out at: http://youtu.be/1R-QsurhW6M.

As for the 2012 fall color forecast, "There is some good news for leaf-lovers," says Bert Cregg, Michigan State University Extension, Departments of Horticulture and Forestry. "The recent rain, cool nights and sunny days are working in favor of prolonging the color, it's an ideal situation as it enables trees to hang on to their leaves and give us a longer show," said Cregg.

Most hot air balloon rides in Michigan last about one hour and Lorenz flies over the woods and streams of Kensington Park and Island Lake State Park. He and several other pilot friends meet at Park 'n Ride area off Milford Road and I-96 (exit # 155) about 2 1/2 hours before sunset. From there he'll launch helium balloons, determine the wind direction, then take a short drive to one of nine launch sites in the area that give the best views and best landing sites downwind.

What to wear? Lorenz suggests passengers wear tennis shoes and jeans. He says the air temp "upstairs" is within a couple degrees of ground temp so it's not a factor. Cameras and video cameras are highly recommended to preserve the once in a lifetime moments while flying over the countryside.

Since fall color balloon flights are popular Lorenz suggests people call now to reserve a spot. Flights cost $695 for a private ride which is two passengers and the pilot. All flights are pre-paid. Visa, MasterCard, AMEX, Discover and PayPal are accepted. Gift certificates are available.

To really appreciate all of the fall color that Michigan has to offer, call a balloonist and schedule a flight today, the view is really better from above!

Mark Cuban Invited to Meet High-Frequency Trading Mavericks at Chicago Shark Tank, October 9

Golden Networking brings the World's Most Influential High-Frequency Trading Conference Series, High Frequency Trading Leaders Forum 2012, now in Chicago, October 9, and London, December 12 (www.High-Frequency-Trading-Conference.com).

New York City, NY, USA (October 7, 2012) -- Mark Cuban has compared high-frequency traders to hackers. Just as hackers search for and exploit operating system and application shortcomings, high frequency traders do the same thing, he said. Moreover, Cuban adds that a hacker wants to jump in front of your shopping cart and grab your credit card and then sell it. "A high frequency trader wants to jump in front of your trade and then sell that stock to you. A hacker will tell you that they are serving a purpose by identifying the weak links in your system. A trader will tell you they deserve the pennies they are making on the trade or the rebate they are getting from the exchange because they provide liquidity to the market."

That's why Cuban has been invited to meet high-frequency trading mavericks at High Frequency Trading Leaders Forum 2012, (http://www.High-Frequency-Trading-Conference.com), this time in the windy city, Chicago, October 9. As of this time, Cuban must be enjoying the first "El Clasico" crash of the Spanish season, Barcelona and Real Madrid, at Camp Nou, before returning to the US.

Cuban has predicted that there will be another flash crash, worse than the May 2010 flash crash, he says, simply because there are too many players looking for the trillion dollar score. "They can't all win, yet how many do you think wouldn't risk everything, even what is not theirs, for that remote chance to score big? Put another way, there is zero recognition of the moral hazard attached to every trade. So why wouldn't traders take the biggest risk possible?"

He concludes: "There is value to trading automation. It is here to stay. There is absolutely NO VALUE to High Frequency Trading. None. We need to bring our markets back to their original goals of creating capital for business. It's impossible to guess how many small to medium size companies have been held back from growing and creating jobs and wealth because of lack of access to capital from the stock market. It's not impossible to know that our economy has suffered because Wall Street equity markets are no longer a source of equity for helping companies grow, it is not a platform for hackers and that needs to change. Quickly."

High Frequency Trading Leaders Forum 2012, "How Knight Capital's 'Knightmare on Wall Street' Could Transform the Regulatory Landscape and Impact Investors, Speed Traders and Brokers" (http://www.HFTLeadersForum.com), will provide attendees in Chicago and London with the most up-to-date review of where this ever-changing industry stands and how new technology and regulatory developments will impact it. Recognized experts, regulators, and strategists, will return to High-Frequency Trading Leaders Forum 2012 to provide the information practitioners are looking for in an open and unbiased environment, highly conducive to the most efficient and effective networking.

High Frequency Trading Leaders Forum 2012 is produced by Golden Networking (http://www.goldennetworking.net), the premier networking community for business executives, entrepreneurs and investors. FRA gets behind World Bank's support of Forest Fire Action

The World Bank has announced that it will be funding the Russian federation's attempts to prevent forest fires, with a cash injection worth a staggering $40 million. The move has been welcomed by FRA.

Seattle, United States, October 6, 2012 -- The World Bank has announced that it will be funding the Russian federation's attempts to prevent forest fires, with a cash injection worth a staggering $40 million. The move has been welcomed by Forestry Research Associates (FRA).

The co-finance deal will take the form of a loan, that will contribute to Russia's $121.26 million Forest Fire Response Project. The forest fire prevention project is run by the Federal Forestry Service and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment in an attempt to reduce the number of devastating forest fires that threaten Russia's valuable forests.

Some 20 per cent of the world's forests are to be found in Russia and every year, around 1.4 million hectares are affected by forest fires. It is thought that around 93 per cent of these forest fires are started by humans. The investment will help the Forest Fire Response Project to monitor the problems, help identify and extinguish fires and reduce the number being started in the first place.

"This investment shows the World Bank's commitment to safeguarding the future of the forestry industry in Russia," stated FRA's analysis partner, Peter Collins.

"Sustainable forestry is not only a major source of employment and income for communities all over the world, but also provides a huge amount of the world's oxygen and carbon absorption. Without trees, we would simply not be able to live," added Collins.

FRA supports sustainable forestry in all its forms and is particularly keen to promote investment in plantation projects that run on a cyclical model, which ensures that trees are always growing to replace those felled.

"Sustainability is the key to any successful managed forestry project, in our opinion," added Mr Collins. That's why we support Greenwood Management's eucalyptus, teak and acacia plantation investment projects in Brazil. These forestry investment projects are a great way for investors to diversify their portfolios."

Cool New iPhone & iPad Game 'Little Bird' Uses Apple's Accelerometer & Gyro

Little Bird combines Apple's accelerometer and gyroscope gaming technologies, exotic landscapes, objects and contraptions allowing you to interact with the game in ways that have never been seen before on an iPhone or iPad.

By tilting your device to the right or left, Little Bird uses the latest technology along with gravity and speed to build momentum so you can get through each of 20 one-of-a-kind levels.

Playing Little Bird is a fun, challenging and unique experience. Before long you'll be rolling, jumping, bouncing, flying through the air, swinging in baskets, riding in carts and shooting out of cannons while avoiding obstacles, booby traps and enemies to help Little Bird collect coins along the path to safety.

Fredericktown, PA (October 6, 2012) -- The medical doctor who created the fun loving "Whack-A-Kitty" video that went viral on YouTube when it was viewed by more than 5 million has created a new gaming app for iPhones and iPads that is sure to be a big hit.

Robert Belluso, DO, loves his medical practice but could not resist his creative longings and arcade gaming background and devoted his spare time to developing the Little Bird gaming app. (http://www.littlebirdgame.com)

Little Bird combines current technology, exotic landscapes, objects, and contraptions, allowing the player to interact in novel ways that have not been seen before in an iPhone game. Little Bird brings the simple idea of a real skill arcade game to the next level, offering a fun, challenging, and unique experience.

Unlike games that rely on tapping, sliding or swiping, Little Bird takes advantage of the latest iPhone technology. The user tilts the device to the right or left, using gravity and speed to build momentum to get through each level.

Before long the gamer is rolling, jumping, bouncing, flying through the air, swinging in baskets, riding in carts, and shooting out of cannons while avoiding obstacles, booby traps and enemies to help Little Bird collect coins along the path to safety.

"Little Bird brings the simple idea of a real skill arcade game, from which the concept was born, to the next level," explains Dr. Belluso, "offering a fun, challenging and unique experience that will keep gamers coming back for more. Little Bird is a fun, gravity driven novel game played with challenging physics-based obstacle courses."

Robert Belluso, an osteopathic physician since 2002, experienced first-hand the evolution of video gaming technology from "Pong" to "Super Mario" to online gaming with a dial-up modem and now to post-pc mobile gaming. He created Little Bird to replicate the skills of playing real arcade-style games as no tapping, sliding or swiping motions are used. Belluso graduated in 2002 from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine and currently practices family medicine in Fredericktown, PA.
