Baolab uses its NanoEMS technology to create ultra-low cost 3D Digital MEMS Compasses in CMOS

Baolab Microsystems is first to design a pure CMOS Lorentz force MEMS sensor and, as a result, its new 3D Digital NanoCompass™ matches performance benchmarks for sensitivity, power consumption and package size, but at a dramatically lower cost.

Barcelona, Spain, July 06, 2011 -- Until now, 3D Compasses have typically used non-standard technologies such as magneto-resistive materials or Hall-effect structures combined with magnetic field concentrators to detect the direction of the Earth’s magnetic field. Baolab Microsystems is first to design a pure CMOS Lorentz force MEMS sensor and, as a result, its new 3D Digital NanoCompass™ matches performance benchmarks for sensitivity, power consumption and package size, but at a dramatically lower cost. An additional unique feature resulting from this integration is that the device auto-calibrates to maintain consistent accuracy.

The BLBC3-D NanoCompass is the first product that will be made using Baolab's breakthrough NanoEMS™ technology. NanoEMS enables nanoscale MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) to be built using standard high-volume CMOS lines and fully integrated monolithically with the analogue and digital electronics. The MEMS elements are defined during the normal CMOS production process within the existing metal interconnect layers of the wafer.

“As the market for 3D Compasses grows for smartphones and other mobile devices, the ASP will be rapidly driven down from around a dollar to 50 cents and lower,” explained Dave Doyle, Baolab's CEO. “Allowing for the fixed costs of testing, tape & reel, pick and place, packaging, etc., the only way to hit this target price and still have a margin for profit is to use our NanoEMS technology, as traditional approaches are several times more expensive. When several devices are integrated onto a single chip to create a multi-sensor device using NanoEMS, the cost savings compared to conventional MEMS become even more significant especially as different sensors require different production processes, unlike NanoEMS.”

Baolab's innovative design uses Lorentz force sensors to detect the Earth’s magnetic field. The MEMS structure, a moveable aluminium plate suspended by springs, is constructed using the metal interconnect layers of the CMOS chip by etching away the Inter Metal Dielectric (IMD) using vHF (vapour HF). When a current passes through the plate, it experiences a force (the Lorentz force) proportional to the surrounding Earth’s magnetic field. The resulting displacement is measured using capacitive detection between the moveable plate and fixed electrodes around it, sensing the magnetic field in the x, y and z directions with a single NanoEMS chip.

Hall effect sensors work well for magnetic field perpendicular to the chip (z direction) but less so in the x and y planes, and are not pure CMOS solutions as they require post processing to deposit some magnetic material on top of the wafer to increase their sensitivity (Integrated Magnetic Concentrator). This adds to the cost of manufacture, as does the additional processing required to realise compass devices from magneto-resistive technologies such as AMR and GMR (Anisotropic Magnetoresistance and Giant Magnetoresistance). Other benefits of Lorentz over Hall include lower power consumption due to the use of metallic conductors to carry the current, increased sensitivity using mechanical resonance and no magnetic saturation issues.

Until now, the Lorentz force approach has not been used extensively due to the cost of manufacture using conventional MEMS techniques, but it is perfectly suited to the mechanical structures supported by Baolab's NanoEMS. Built in a standard CMOS process flow, NanoEMS makes it possible to manufacture the devices at a fraction of the cost, opening the market for a new generation of mobile devices that take advantage of Baolab's lower cost 3D NanoCompasses.

Engineering samples of the BLBC3-D NanoCompass will be available in 2012 along with a comprehensive evaluation kit. It provides 5 degree heading resolution and 13-bits per axis. Commercial product will have an I2C or SPI digital serial interface and a choice of either a 3x3x0.9mm 10 pin DFN/0.5mm pitch package, which provides drop in compatibility with existing solutions, or a 2x2x0.75mm BGA package. Greenwood Management welcomes Brazilian progress on Olympic preparation

Reports that Brazil is making major inroads into its preparation for the 2016 Olympic Games have been welcomed by forestry investment firm Greenwood Management ApS.

Copenhagen, Denmark, July 05, 2011 -- Reports that Brazil is making major inroads into its preparation for the 2016 Olympic Games have been welcomed by forestry investment firm Greenwood Management ApS.

The Denmark-based investment firm operated sustainable forest plantations in the Latin American country, which is investing heavily in improving its infrastructure ahead of the major sporting event. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) claims Rio de Janeiro is making “remarkable progress’ in the preparations, with vast improvements being made to airports and other infrastructure that is vital to the smooth running of the event.

One of the major markets for Greenwood Management’s timber is for charcoal for the steel industry. As the work for the Olympics and the World Cup in 2014 continues, the demand for steel is rising and, therefore, the market for charcoal from non-native trees is expanding significantly.

Nawal El Moutawakel, the head of the IOC’s Coordination Commission, said, "Today I am happy to say that Rio 2016 and its partners have taken those words seriously and made remarkable progress.”

A spokesperson for Greenwood Management said, “We are thrilled to hear that the IOC has praised the rate of progress in Rio, with regard to the development of the region’s infrastructure. We predict further rises in the price and demand for charcoal from the steel industry as the investment in infrastructure continues over the coming years.”

Greenwood claims that it is seeing large demand for its charcoal as the Brazilian government has recently introduced legislation to discourage the use of charcoal from native timber within the steel industry.

The firm offer investors the option of buying up sections of forested land in Brazil, Canada and soon in Costa Rica. Investments in managed forestry have become popular in the wake of the financial crisis as this kind of alternative investment is not as responsive to, or dependent on, the performance of the stock markets. Therefore, risk-averse investors are turning to alternatives to ensure that some of their cash will be safe even in the event of another economic slump.

Russians Eager To Invest In Art Says AAA

Alternative investment advocacy group, AAA (Alternative Asset Analysis) claims that Russia is an important market for anyone considering opting for investments in art and antiques to diversify their portfolios.

Boston, MA, USA, July 03, 2011 -- Alternative investment advocacy group, AAA (Alternative Asset Analysis) claims that Russia is an important market for anyone considering opting for investments in art and antiques to diversify their portfolios.

AAA’s statement on the subject follows reports that a major British art consultancy called Art Market Research (AMR), is to offer its services in Russia due to the growth in the market there. The consultancy firm has produced market analysis reports and indexes to illustrate the rise and fall of the market for art and antiques. It also counts major auction houses in London, such as Christie’s and Sotheby’s as clients.

The consultancy’s director, Robin Duthy, said, "Russia is a country of vast opportunities. I am convinced of the great potential of its art market as well as in the swift development of the Russian banking system."

It has announced that it plans to team up with Russian partner Kollection after raising some EUR 500,000 to facilitate the expansion.

“This is a clever move by AMR,” said AAA’s analysis partner Anthony Johnson. “A growing number of people are keen to invest in tangible alternative assets that allow them to rest assured that their money will not disappear in front of their eyes in the event of another economic crash.

“The market for alternative investments in almost every form is growing and the art market is Russia looks to be particularly exciting new ground for investors who enjoy owning beautiful objects and investing in their future,” added Mr Johnson.

Russia’s appetite for high value art is being driven by the increasingly sophisticated and expensive tastes of its super-rich. They are demanding the same opportunities to invest in masterpiece paintings and antiques as their counterparts in London and at the moment, although they have far fewer auction houses offering this kind of investment, claimed AAA.

AMR’s Mr Duthy added that he is moving into the Russian market to offer the super-rich advice and guidance in terms of what makes a good deal, "I am certain there is a tremendous need for complex investment analysis in Russia's arts and antiques market,” he stated.

AAA Notes Increased Interest In Extremely Alternative Investments

Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA) has revealed that as the number of people opting for more mainstream alternative investments increases, so does the number of people opting for the more extreme end of alternative investments.

Boston, MA, USA, June 30, 2011 -- Alternative investment advocacy organization, Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA), says that as the number of people opting for more mainstream alternative investments increases, so does the number of people opting for the most alternative side of alternative investments.

AAA’s analysis partner, Anthony Johnson, stated, “People are becoming more and more willing to try the alternatives market and some are looking into some really unusual investments to try to make a fortune – and good luck to them, sometimes it pays off!”

An example of this is the case of one Don Poffenroth who became tired of watching his $400,000 investment gain returns of between 3 and 5 percent. CNN Money reports that in 2007 he opted to take his money and invest $300,000 in a vodka distillery in the US. The distillery was one of just a small number in the whole of the States at the time and his risk paid dividends. The distillery is now raking in annual revenues of $1.5 million and Poffenroth’s 60 per cent stake is worth $1.2 million.

AAA says that a recent Russell investments’ survey found that investment in alternatives is set to grow to an average of 19 per cent of portfolio by 2012, from current levels of 14 per cent. “This positivity towards alternative assets is due to the fact that people are increasingly approaching their fund managers and asking them to diversity their portfolio to spread the risk,” claimed Johnson. “No one wants to be caught out again and investing in alternatives protects cash form the impact of wider economic factors,” he added.

For those who are keen on taking a leap of faith into the alternatives market, but are not quite in the position to risk it all on a vodka distillery, forestry investment in emerging markets is a sensible option, claims AAA. Firms like Greenwood Management offer people with as little as $10,000 to invest, the chance to own a piece of forested land in Brazil. They then get to watch their investment literally grow while feeling confident that their investment is also helping to prevent deforestation and help the Brazilian economy to flourish.

Many high net worth individuals around the world are also looking to include (quality) art as an important string in their investment bow. In a recent survey of high net worth individuals Merrill Lynch and Capgemini noted that art is the most likely 'investment of passion' to be seen as a form of financial investment. The same survey – the 2011 World Wealth Report – noted that alternative investments were up were up from five per cent of total portfolio value in 2009 to seven per cent in 2010, with this forecast to rise to as high as nine per cent in 2012.

Glenmore Healthcare's hCG Program is Consistent with Dr. Oz's hCG Principles

Calgary, Alberta, June 30, 2011 -- The core principles of Glenmore Healthcare's hCG for Weight Loss Program are consistent with those outlined by Dr. Oz in his interview for First for Women magazine's June 27th issue: it is imperative for patients to undertake an hCG program under the care of a trained physician, and never use hCG (homeopathic hCG) that is sold without a prescription.

In his recent interview in the June 27, 2011 issue of First for Women magazine (http://www.magazines.com/product/first-for-women), Dr. Oz delivers several key messages regarding the safe and effective use of pharmaceutical grade hCG in a physician-supervised weight loss program. These key messages are consistent the hCG for Weight Loss Program offered at Calgary's Glenmore Healthcare and Wellness Clinic (http://www.glenmorehealthcare.com):

1. Physician Supervision for patients undergoing an hCG Program is essential.
2. Never buy hCG over the internet. Only use pharmaceutical grade hCG as prescribed by a physician. hCG that is not prescribed by a physician is homeopathic hCG and has been found to only contain trace amounts of real hCG.
3. Successful weight loss using hCG requires that the patient follow a proven hCG protocol precisely.

Dr. Oz comments, in his article in First Magazine, that "there are some real legitimate folks out there who seem to have success with this," protocol, which "dates back to the 1950’s when "Dr. A.T.W. Simeons claimed that human chorionic gonadotrophin [hCG], a hormone produced during pregnancy to ensure a fetus gets necessary nutrients, could also promote weight loss....by simultaneously suppressing appetite while helping the boy burn fat."

Dr. Oz acknowledges that while hCG is not currently approved by the FDA for weight loss, "sometimes it's because the science hasn't caught up. When we see real people do things that work, we in the medical profession have to pay attention." The evidence is overwhelming. The IAPAM reports that over 10,000 patients have lost or are currently loosing weight under the care of the more than 400 physicians who have completed the IAPAM's hCG Training in the safe delivery of hCG for weight loss.

Glenmore Healthcare's exclusive hCG Weight Loss Program (http://www.glenmorehealthcare.com/our-program) concurs with Dr. Oz's hCG recommendations. Glenmore Healthcare's hCG medically supervised weight loss program is based upon the successful protocol originally developed in 1954 by Dr. Simeons, and detailed in his report, Pounds and Inches, and is built around a low calorie diet coupled with the administration of the pharmaceutical grade of the naturally occurring hormone, hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin). Glenmore Healthcare follows the IAPAM's (International Association for Physicians in Aesthetic Medicine) hCG Weight Loss Protocol, which has been administered to over 10,000 patients around the world with consistent weight loss results.

Patients participating in the Glenmore Healthcare’s hCG for Weight Loss Program are monitored by a licensed physician who specializes in hCG for weight loss. Labs and vital statistics are recorded prior to starting the program. Patients at Glenmore Healthcare have lost as much as 20 pounds in our 26 day program, and 35 pounds in our 43 day program. At the end of the program, clinic staff will test a patient’s RMR (Resting Metabolic Rate) with the same equipment as used on NBC's "The Biggest Loser."

The FDA states that, “HCG is a hormone extracted from the urine of pregnant women. It is approved by the FDA for the treatment of certain problems of the male reproductive system and in stimulating ovulation in women who have had difficulty becoming pregnant. No evidence has been presented, however, to substantiate claims for HCG as a weight-loss aid.” This is absolutely true if homeopathic hCG is taken, or the entire protocol is not followed. hCG taken on its own will not result in rapid, safe weight loss. It is very important that when a patient partakes of an hCG weight loss program, that they complete it under the supervision of a physician and follow the entire detailed protocol, as is done at Glenmore Heathcare.
