Michigan's Fall Colors Are Magnificent from a Hot Air Balloon

Fall color season is fast approaching and there's no better way to see the colors than from a hot air balloon. Michigan balloonists offer a stunning platform from which to enjoy this once a year feast for the eyes.

Plymouth, MI - September 14, 2011 -- “Flying OVER the fall colors in a hot air balloon is the best,” says Scott Lorenz, President and Chief Pilot of Westwind Balloon Company of Plymouth, Michigan. http://www.PureMichiganBalloon.com

The palate of colors just takes your breath away," says Lorenz "I love taking photos from the balloon especially when we fly over Kensington Park, it’s fabulous, it’s ten times better than driving. People just have no idea how pretty it is until they get above it."

Want to get a preview of a flight?” asks Lorenz, “check out a video I put together of some of our fall color flights. The views are spectacular as we glide over the tops of the canopy of trees. There’s no better way to enjoy Michigan’s fall colors than from a hot air balloon.” Check it out at: http://youtu.be/1R-QsurhW6M

Most hot air balloon rides in Michigan last about one hour and Lorenz flies over the woods and streams of Kensington Park and Island Lake State Park. He and several other pilot friends meet at Park 'n Ride area off Milford Road and I-96 (exit # 155) about 2 1/2 hours before sunset. From there he'll launch helium balloons, determine the wind direction, then take a short drive to one of nine launch sites in the area that give the best views and best landing sites downwind.

What to wear? Lorenz suggests passengers wear tennis shoes and jeans. He says the air temp “upstairs” is within a couple degrees of ground temp so it’s not a factor. Cameras and video cameras are highly recommended to preserve the once in a lifetime moments while flying over the countryside.

Since fall color balloon flights are popular Lorenz suggests people call now to reserve a spot. Flights cost $695 for a private ride which is two passengers and the pilot. All flights are pre-paid. Visa, MasterCard, AMEX, Discover and PayPal are accepted. Gift certificates are available.

To really appreciate all of the fall color that Michigan has to offer, call a balloonist and schedule a flight today, the view is really better from above!

Florida Power & Light Moving Massive Transformer

FPL upgrading St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant.

Juno Beach, FL, September 13, 2011 -- If you're driving in the Palm Beaches or along the Treasure Coast in the early morning hours, don't be surprised if you see a truck the size of a football field inching along the road beside you.

Florida Power & Light Company is moving a massive transformer from the Port of Palm Beach to the Treasure Coast. It will become a key component in the company’s upgrades of the St. Lucie Nuclear Power Plant.

When you consider a piece of equipment that’s 15-feet tall and weighs 700,000 pounds, moving it even one inch becomes a logistical challenge.

To minimize traffic disruptions and comply with Florida DOT procedures, we are moving this equipment in the early morning hours,” said Mike Waldron, Director of Nuclear Communications for FPL. “We are taking every precaution to ensure it’s moved safely to its final destination, with the least amount of inconvenience as possible to the public.”

The transformer started its trek from the port Monday night, Sept. 12, onboard a 286-foot long transporter truck. When it arrives at the St. Lucie Power Plant on Wednesday, following an overnight stay in Ft. Pierce, crews will offload the equipment using hydraulic jacks. They will move it along rails called “runway beams” that are lubricated with Teflon pads and common dish soap to help ease it into place.

The transformer, once installed, is part of an extensive project to improve the efficiency of the St. Lucie Plant and enable greater power production. Components such as pipes, valves, pumps, heat exchangers, electrical transformers and generators will be replaced or upgraded to accommodate the conditions that would exist at higher power levels.

FPL customers are already seeing some significant benefits from this project,” said Waldron. “As a result of the upgrades we have already made, customers have saved $30,000 a day, or approximately $1 million per month in fuel costs. That’s because we are making the plant more fuel efficient.”

Waldron noted that the improvements to both St. Lucie and Turkey Point Plants will replace the need for approximately 5 million barrels of oil each year, reducing CO2 emissions by 33 million tons over the life of the project.

The project will employ approximately 4,000 contractors. The new transformer will be installed at the plant during its planned outage, beginning Nov. 26.

Authors Pose the Question Are We Poisoning Our Kids With Food?

Children are now developing obesity-related diseases, previously considered primarily adult conditions, at an alarming rate.

New York, NY - September 12, 2011 -- Today, nearly one-in-three children is overweight or obese. Children are now developing obesity-related diseases, previously considered primarily adult conditions, at an alarming rate. Diabetes is showing up in children as young as 10 years old. These lifestyle related diseases such as type-2 diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, poor glucose and insulin metabolism, asthma, allergies and the collection known as metabolic syndrome are becoming common even before the age of 18. Many children are now taking adult medications for these chronic conditions. Sadly, studies show that 70% of overweight kids will be overweight or obese in adulthood.

Parents need to wake up and take responsibility for setting the example along with teaching their children how to eat properly, keep active and maintain a healthy lifestyle,” say Dian Griesel Ph.D. and Tom Griesel, co-authors of the amazing rapid fat loss book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH). Why are our children getting fat and sick? According to the Griesel’s, parents and educators are allowing it to happen and most likely contributing to it. They elaborate: “Parents would not knowingly poison their children or let them play with loaded guns; however that is exactly what is happening when children are allowed to consume diets of processed, refined, fast-food, sugar-laden sodas and other drinks and all other junk food.” Read more.

AAA backs forecast for rise in Brazil real estate values

Alternative Asset Analysis has backed forecasts that Brazilian real estate sector is poised for further expansion, boosting the foreign direct investment (FDI) in the country.

Boston, MA, USA, September 11, 2011 -- The Brazilian real estate sector is expected to help boost the foreign direct investment (FDI) in Brazil even further, said Anthony Johnson of Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA), together with a US-based expert.

According to David Lynn of New York-based Clarion Partners, Brazil’s real estate market offers “attractive opportunities” to investors. Writing for National Real Estate Investor, he continued to explain that there are a number of “positive fundamentals” that suggest that the market will be stable and will offer good returns in the years to come.

Anthony Johnson, an analysis partner at AAA, which encourages investment in alternative assets - and particularly in emerging economies - commented, “We welcome Mr Lynn’s assertions that Brazilian real estate could be a safe haven for investors in the coming years.

His comments support our own view that Brazil is a fantastic place to invest as it will continue to see economic growth in the future.”

AAA back up their claims about Brazil with figures recently published by the Brazilian Central Bank, which show that foreign direct investment inflows rose in the first six months of this year to their highest levels since 1947, which was when records began. The total invested was US$32.5 billion, which represented 67 per cent of the total FDI for the whole of last year - suggesting that 2011 could be an even better year for Brazil than 2010.

The interest in alternative asset classes has helped spur investment in Brazil, according to AAA, which cited the success of sustainable forestry projects, such as those run by Greenwood Management, which offers direct investment opportunities in plantations of non-native timbers such as eucalyptus and teak. “The market for these timbers products is enormous and growing at the moment, thanks to massive economic growth in Asia,” explained AAA. The organization also cited the upcoming FIFA World Cup and Olympics 2016 as a major driver in the Brazil domestic steel industry - a major market for sustainably produced charcoal.

The Journey Towards an HIV Cure Has Already Started

The time between now and the day when a cure for HIV is found is rapidly decreasing. What didn't seem possible a generation ago is now within striking distance. At this point, it's not a matter of if an HIV cure will be found, but when.

Toulon, France, September 11, 2011 -- The time between now and the day when a cure for HIV is found is rapidly decreasing. What didn't seem possible a generation ago is now within striking distance. Scientists have announced that for the first time in the 30-year history of battling HIV and AIDS, there is a clear path leading to a cure for the disease. Over 25 million people worldwide have died due to AIDS-related diseases, and this is welcome news for the millions of people around the world who are currently living with the disease.

For most people with access to medication, advancements in technology have transformed HIV into a chronic, lifelong disease that must be managed primarily through antiretroviral therapy (ART). It is a costly, daily procedure, but it has been very effective at suppressing the virus. We have reached the point where ART can't be made any more effective than it is right now; a plateau has been reached. So, now the focus of HIV research has turned toward finding a cure. The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) recently spent $14 million on finding different methods to suppress HIV or permanently keep it at bay.

NIAID funding has also been distributed to research universities and laboratories who are investigating whether gene therapy techniques can be used to make cells genetically resistant to HIV. A very rare genetic mutation that only a miniscule percentage of the world's population possesses does just that-makes the person with the mutation resistant to HIV infection. This important research could form the basis for a possible HIV cure. The major stumbling block is the last hiding place for HIV within the body-the HIV reservoir. These reservoirs are made up of dormant, HIV-infected cells. While current ART techniques have been effective at preventing HIV infection through the bloodstream, cell-to-cell infection is still possible within these reservoirs. A different plan of attack is needed to deal with this problem.

The term of "cure" is being stretched out a bit. Researchers are exploring "cure" scenarios. For example, HIV can still be detected within the body, but the viral load is such that the virus is not circulating. The infected person never progresses to full blown AIDS, nor does the HIV-infected person have the ability to pass the virus onto others. In effect, the virus within the body has become sterile and harmless. This is a promising scenario, and it's one that medical researchers, physicians, and scientists will gladly take. At this point, it's not a matter of if an HIV cure will be found, but when.

Canadian green forestry investment welcomed by FRA

Forestry Research Associates (FRA) has reported that the Canadian government has announced further investment in the forestry industry of New Brunswick to help boost the local economy.

Seattle, United States, September 09, 2011 -- The Canadian government has announced further investment in the forestry industry of New Brunswick to help boost the local economy, reported Forestry Research Associates (FRA).

Joe Oliver, the Minister of Natural Resources, said the government is investing a further CA$6.1 million into the forestry industry in order to protect jobs. He explained, "Today's announcements highlight key investments in the transformation of the forest industry and reconfirm that our Government's top priority remains the economy.

"With the economic recovery still fragile, we will continue to take action to protect and create jobs in Canada, including the important forestry jobs right here in New Brunswick,” he added.

Forestry Research Associates, a US-based analysis and research consultancy, welcomed the investment, adding that the money is necessary to help protect the fragile industry during tough times.

The investment will largely be used to help paper and pulp mills in the region to take advantage of developments in clean energy generation. For example, two mills have received funding through the Pulp and Paper Green Transformation Program, which is expected the help them reduce their impact on the environment, which will benefit local communities.

"With these investments our Government is continuing to implement our plan that supports innovative change in New Brunswick's forest sector," stated Keith Ashfield, Regional Minister for New Brunswick.

The government is keen to invest in the clean energy development as they see it as the best way to safeguard the future of the industry in the region. FRA’s analysis partner, Peter Collins, said, “We welcome the news that Canada’s government is not only investing in the future of forestry, but in the future of the country’s environment by helping to reduce the impact mills have on the local environment.

It’s vital that forestry becomes 100 per cent sustainable, which also includes the energy mills used in the production process,” he added.

Local figures have lined up to welcome the new investment and the move towards a greener industry in New Brunswick.

SeatChoice Launches New Mobile App for Theatre and Gig Ticket Buyers

Leading theatre and gig ticket comparison website SeatChoice.com has created a mobile phone app for the Android platform to help theatre and music fans get ticket information on the go.

London, UK - September 09, 2011 -- Leading theatre and gig ticket comparison website SeatChoice.com has created a mobile phone app for the Android platform to help theatre and music fans get ticket information on the go.

The 'app', which is free to download from the Android Market, is linked to the massive UK Theatre Web database and helps users search for performances and concerts across the UK. The UK Theatre Web database contains details on approximately 20,000 events.

The 'app' provides information on the event dates, the cast and the venue and will also give details of STAR (Society of Ticket Agents and Retailers) outlets with theatre tickets available or contact details of the venue box office and a link to the website. Users can also leave reviews and ratings which will be seen by other app users.

To find the 'app', search for UKTW on the Android Market. Android platform smartphones include Samsung, Nexus, Sony Ericsson and HTC.

Robert Iles, founder of SeatChoice.com and UK Theatre Web commented

"We've created this free 'app' to help theatre and gig fans find information about shows, concerts and other events wherever they may be. The 'app' is built in such a way that it will even provide basic information when there's no internet connection so users should be able to find out what they need even with just a mobile signal. More and more people are using their mobile phones to find information and this new service will help theatre and music fans find out what they need simply and quickly."

The SeatChoice.com website helps users to compare and purchase tickets to shows and concerts across the UK.

UKTW is behind the 'What’s-On' content for several established theatre websites including http://www.arts-archive.co.uk where users can find information for theatre productions dating back to 1997. Eventually this information will also be accessible directly from the new ‘app’. UK Theatre Web’s database is seen by around 500,000 users every month.

FPL powers energy education, jobs for South Florida

With the nation’s unemployment numbers looming large, South Florida has been hit especially hard. But bright futures await students in FPL’s cooperative energy education programs at Miami Dade College and Indian River State College.

Juno Beach, FL, September 08, 2011 -- With the nation’s unemployment numbers looming large, South Florida has been hit especially hard. But bright futures await students in FPL’s cooperative energy education programs at Miami Dade College and Indian River State College.

Graduating their fourth classes this year, the Clean Energy Institute at MDC and the Power Plant Technology Institute at IRSC are innovative partnerships between the schools, FPL and the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers in response to the workforce needs of the energy industry.

The programs prepare individuals for high-skill, high-wage jobs. After two years of training, the graduates earn an associate in science degree and job offers from FPL, one of the state’s largest employers. One of these graduates is Marcos Rodriguez, who, at age 20, is about to begin a career as a nuclear technician at FPL’s Turkey Point Nuclear Plant. Below is his story.

When I was a junior in high school at Miami Lakes Educational Center, I would often dream about my future.

At first, I wanted to be an automobile service technician, like my Dad. He was always working with cars and while I was growing up I would help him. I've just always had a love for being a mechanic. But even more than that, I was intrigued by the physics behind the working components - learning how things work and why.

That’s when I started thinking what else I could do with the rest of my life. My cousin works at the Turkey Point Nuclear Plant and told me about a nuclear apprentice program at Miami Dade College’s Clean Energy Institute. It’s a partnership between MDC and Florida Power & Light. You receive extensive training and, once you graduate, you're eligible for jobs with an average starting salary of $55,000 to $57,000.

I was excited about the opportunity, and with my cousin’s encouragement I signed up for the program at MDC’s Homestead campus. This ended up being a life changing experience.

The program provided me with an internship at the nuclear plant. For two years I got a first-hand experience working at the plant and learning the equipment - and I fell in love with it.

It’s a great working environment. Everyone at the plant is really friendly, and as an intern, I have a lot of mentors there and they are eager to teach and share their knowledge.

Education has turned my life around and I now I am excited about my future. Despite the rough economy, I know we'll have to produce more electricity in the future when the market gets back to normal. I feel honored to be a part of that.

Marcos Rodriguez is one of 22 students who graduated from Miami Dade College’s Clean Energy Institute this summer. FPL is involved in a similar cooperative program with Indian River State College.
