FPL's Shopping List Can Help You Save Energy and Money

FPL’s Danielle Mousseau recently visited a local home improvement store with the goal of spending $100 on energy-efficient products.

Juno Beach, FL, October 05, 2011 -- If you've ever wondered if it’s worth spending the extra few dollars to buy energy efficient products, one bargain-savvy shopper says 'absolutely' - and she’s tallied the savings to prove it.

FPL’s Danielle Mousseau recently visited a local home improvement store with the goal of spending $100 on energy-efficient products.

“As someone who finds home improvement stores a little daunting, I knew I needed to be prepared. I brought a list with me so I knew exactly what I was looking for, and so I could get the most savings for the money,” she said.

Here’s a look at Danielle’s shopping list:

5 Compact fluorescent light bulbs
Estimated Cost: $15
Energy Savings:$250/lifetime

1 Low flow shower head
Estimated Cost: $30
Energy Savings: $80/year

3 Faucet aerators
Estimated Cost: $8
Energy Savings: $15/ year

Weather stripping
and door sweeps
Estimated Cost: $40
Energy Savings: $50/year

1 Water heater
pipe insulation kit
Estimated Cost: $5
Energy Savings: $14/year
Cost $98 Total Energy Savings $409

For less than $100, Mousseau managed to purchase products that, over their lifetime, will save her $409 – that’s more than a 400 percent return on her quick shopping trip.

“The idea I want to share with people is that making just a few small changes around your home can make a big difference - both for saving energy and money,” she said. “As an FPL customer, I know I have the lowest electric bill in Florida, and making a few small energy efficient changes at home helps me to make it even lower.”

If you choose to make bigger changes, and somewhat larger investments - things like computer monitors, laser printers and copiers - you can realize even greater savings. Mousseau says products that have an “Energy Star” rating can save you at least 30 percent compared to traditional products.

If you want a chance to go on your own energy efficient mini-shopping spree, visit http://www.facebook.com/fplconnect on Facebook for your chance to be one of five winners each week in October to win $100 home improvement gift card.

Zevrix Updates LinkOptimizer for InDesign, Adds Selective Layer Processing

Zevrix Solutions announces LinkOptimizer 4.6, a feature update to its popular workflow automation solution for Adobe InDesign. Awarded 4 out of 5 starts by Computer Arts magazine, LinkOptimizer allows to reduce InDesign job size and speed up processing by eliminating excess image data, performing essential image adjustments and converting file formats automatically. The new version lets users ignore or process images on specific layers of InDesign document.

Toronto (ON), Canada - October 5, 2011 -- Zevrix Solutions today announces the release of LinkOptimizer 4.6, a feature update to its popular workflow automation solution for Adobe InDesign. Awarded 4 out of 5 starts by Computer Arts magazine, LinkOptimizer automates complex image manipulation tasks allowing to significantly reduce the size of InDesign job, save processing time and reduce production costs.

"For those wanting to quickly optimize their images and cut down on processing time, LinkOptimizer is a very smart choice," concludes Computer Arts.

The new version introduces selective layer processing letting users ignore or process images on specific layers of InDesign document.

LinkOptimizer works automatically with Adobe Photoshop to eliminate the excess image data of InDesign links, perform essential image adjustments and convert various image formats. For example, with just a click of a button users can:

-scale and crop images to match their dimensions in InDesign,
-change their resolution to 300 ppi,
-convert all RGB images to CMYK,
-resave all JPEG images as TIFF,
-run a Photoshop Action on each image.

At the end of processing, LinkOptimizer will reimport images to InDesign at 100% in their precise position. In addition, the software can apply sharpening filters, merge layers and delete hidden ones, and process copies of InDesign documents and links instead of original files. As a result, users can save gigabytes of disk space and countless hours of optimizing images manually, accelerate document output, reduce job turnaround and cut costs through faster processing.

Pricing and Availability:
LinkOptimizer can be purchased from Zevrix website for US$259.95 as well as from authorized resellers. Trial is also available for download. The update is free for LinkOptimizer 4.x users and $98.78 to upgrade from previous versions. LinkOptimizer is available for Mac OS X 10.4.2-10.7, a Universal Binary, and works with Adobe InDesign CS2-CS5.

FRA Supports Call To End Export Of Raw Logs

Forestry Research Associates (FRA) is lending its support to the forestry workers of British Colombia, Canada, who are calling for an end to the export of raw logs to China for processing.

Seattle, United States, October 05, 2011 -- Forestry Research Associates (FRA) is lending its support to the forestry workers of British Colombia, Canada, who are calling for an end to the export of raw logs to China for processing.

The workers are concerned that the practice could threaten the future of the region’s forestry industry. Those calling for the ban on the activity marched from the Pulp, Paper and Woodworkers of Canada (PPWC) union hall to the offices of Western Forest Products, which is responsible for some of the raw log exports.

One former worker who is campaigning against the practice, Don Robertson, said, "This industry has been almost destroyed due to raw log exports. I think all of our mills should be running and doing all the processing here so we can keep the jobs in B.C."

Peter Collins, an analyst at FRA, a research and analysis consultancy that promotes sustainable approaches to forestry around the world, said, “It’s vital that the Canadian Government takes measures to safeguard the future of the British Colombian forestry industry for generations to come.”

He added, “FRA is backing the workers all the way on this issue - the processing of the timber needs to be done in Canada, rather than outsourced to China to ensure forestry workers have jobs to do.”

FRA pointed to the concerning figures that show log exports increasing by 50 per cent last year alone, which by itself is not necessarily a negative thing, but it could be more positive if the processing work remained in Canada.

The president of the PPWC union, Arnold Bercov, said that policymakers need to take a “good hard look” at the likely repercussions if the practice of exporting raw logs for processing in China is not banned or at least reduced.

AAA Supports BBC Report On Impact Investing

People living below the poverty line in India could benefit as a result of impact investing, according to Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA) and a new report by the BBC.

Boston, MA, USA, October 05, 2011 -- People living below the poverty line in India could benefit as a result of impact investing, according to Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA) and a new report by the BBC.

AAA has said that the new report from the BBC concludes that impact investing is a useful means of helping more of the world's poor work their way out of poverty and into the middle classes. Impact investing does this by providing small businesses and social enterprises with the financial strength they need to expand and employ more people in developing countries.

Many such businesses find it difficult to secure bank loans or other traditional routes of finance. However, impact investment funds, which are sometimes run by some of the world’s most influential and wealthy people, can provide a lifeline.

The BBC report used the example of a businessman called Virender Kumar who runs a small business sorting plastics for recycling, which employs several local people. He wants to expand his business but lacks the finance to do so. This is exactly the kind of enterprise that impact investing could help.

AAA’s analysis partner Anthony Johnson stated, “Impact investing is not only a cutting edge and very effective way to help those in developing countries to work themselves out of poverty, it is also an extremely popular alternative investment route for investors with a social and environmental.

The beauty of impact investment is that a small loan can make a huge difference to a community, explained Mr Johnson. He added, “Small loans can help small businesses take on more employees, whose children can then go to school instead of being sent out to work, which helps to make communities better-educated and stronger in the long run."

Now, JP Morgan and The Times of India are teaming up to launch an award for businesses that have a major social impact. Awards organizer Rahul Kansal told the BBC, “Increasingly we are seeing that in a country like India, there are avenues like healthcare, education, civic areas like waste management which need attention.

"The government cannot cope with the size of the problem. This is where organizations both for profit and non-profit can step in,” he added.

HIV Eradication Research - Is a Cure Close?

Although a cure is not yet within reach, experts are optimistic that they will unlock the secret to eradicating HIV with in the near future.

Toulon, France, October 01, 2011 -- Although great strides have been made in the area of HIV eradication research, some experts still estimate that as much as 70% of the individuals infected with HIV are not receiving treatment. This means that HIV is still claiming the lives of scores of individuals throughout the world. Although the treatments that are available have proven to be effective at prolonging an individual's life so that HIV does not automatically mean a death sentence, there is still a long way to go before a cure is reached. Fortunately, great strides been made and there is a chance that an HIV cure will be found in our lifetimes.

Researchers are focusing on four primary approaches when it comes to HIV eradication research. The first approach is simply to provide patients with more HIV medications. This means providing the necessary drugs to individuals who have been unable to receive treatment and to concentrate on the medications that have proven to be effective. Another approach involves therapeutic vaccines. These are also referred to as immune modulators and work in a similar way to the vaccines that we are all accustomed to. They help to improve the body's natural ability to fight off HIV.

One of the things that researchers have been struggling to understand is why the medications that are currently available have not proven to be a cure for HIV. One idea is that the virus goes into hiding which is why a third approach being used by researchers is to use drugs that force the virus out of hiding so that the drugs and the body's immune system can work together to kill all the infected cells. Finally, researchers are using inflammation blockers to block the chronic inflammatory condition that individuals experience even when undergoing drug therapy. Researchers believe that this inflammation can lead to the persistence of the virus.

Although a cure is not yet within reach, experts are optimistic that they will unlock the secret to eradicating HIV with in the near future. Unfortunately, HIV eradication research is not something that is inexpensive or quick. It takes massive amounts of money and the dedication of skilled researchers and scientists which is why it is important that the focus on obtaining a cure not be lost. Even though HIV may not have the same deadly results in this country as it did only a few decades ago, it is still killing people throughout the world which is why it is so important to keep searching for a cure.

AAA Shows Support For Women's Alternative Investment Summit

Alternative Asset Analysis has announced its support for the return of the Women’s Alternative Investment Summit to New York in November.

Boston, MA, USA, September 30, 2011 -- Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA) is welcoming the return of the Women’s Alternative Investment Summit to New York in November.

The summit, which is in its third year, attracted a huge crowd of some 250 executives and other influential women who were keen to explore alternative investments in more detail.

This year’s meeting in Midtown Manhattan will include keynote speeches on several different kinds of alternative investments, including real estate, private equity and hedge funds.

Some 50 speakers will take to the stage over the course of the two-day event, which will run from 3-4 November, explained AAA, which supports the promotion of alternative assets as a valid and lucrative alternative to traditional investments such as stocks and shares.

“In these volatile times, it’s important that everyone reviews their investment portfolio to ensure it is well diversified to minimize their exposure to risk,” stated AAA’s analysis partner, Anthony Johnson.

Some of the topic to be discussed at the summit will include ‘Real Estate Portfolio Management,’ ‘Will Institutional Investors Continue to Warm to Hedge Funds’ and ‘Global Private Equity: How Regions Measure Up by Performance.’

Some of the exhibitors expected at the summit include private equity and real estate firm Landmark Partners, who are returning for their second year, and Ascendant Compliance Management, which is attending for its first year.

AAA is a particularly active advocate of ethical investments and offers forestry investment as a strong option for anyone looking to reduce the risk in their portfolio while helping to reduce deforestation. Forestry investment projects, such as the one operated by Greenwood Management, which involves managing plantations in Brazil can help safeguard the future of the forestry industry. This kind of managed approached to sustainable forestry help spread the world that there can be value in standing trees as well as in timber, according to AAA.

FPL Program: Saving Energy Saves Money

Create a Business Energy Savings Plan that Impacts the Bottom Line.

Juno Beach, FL, September 29, 2011 -- In anticipation of Energy Awareness Month in October, FPL hosted a webinar for small and medium-sized businesses this week focused on helping increase corporate bottom lines through energy savings to avoid cuts in jobs, salaries and benefits. According to webinar moderator Nancy Flickinger, account manager for FPL’s Customer Service Field Operations, energy savings provides a preferred alternative that doesn't detract from business operations, employee experience or jobs while still reducing company overhead.

The webinar helped business owners and operations managers learn how to uncover savings opportunities and maximize those savings by turning FPL’s recommendations into a savings plan.

“The reality is, a good energy plan is good business, whether your company is large or small,” said Flickinger. “In addition to the obvious payback of saving energy and money month after month, there are other benefits to developing and implementing an ongoing energy management program, including reduced maintenance and labor costs after upgrading to new, more efficient equipment.”

The webinar discussed how saving energy reduces the cost of doing business, improving profitability and competitiveness in the marketplace. Additionally, from a marketing perspective, many companies opt to leverage the competitive advantage of being environmentally friendly and have found it opens the door to new business and promotional opportunities.

FPL provides resources to help assess and evaluate energy savings opportunities through its free Business Energy Evaluation (BEE). Once the results of the BEE are calculated, FPL can help customers set goals, evaluate options, review optional voluntary rates and FPL incentive programs; implement the improvements (starting with low-cost or no-cost options) and track the results. In addition to the BEE, FPL also helps business customers find participating contractors who can install energy-efficiency improvements like air conditioning, refrigeration, water heating, lighting and process FPL incentives.

According to Flickinger, employee engagement is one of the most effective no-cost methods of reducing energy use.

“The best way to start the process is to set energy-efficiency goals and objectives and to identify an Energy Champion to manage an ongoing team and employee energy plan that supports management’s objectives,” said Flickinger. “To maintain commitment over time, the team should periodically review the energy plan and keep it fresh. Finally, be sure to share news about initiatives and results of the process to motivate employees to jump on the energy-saving bandwagon, whether this is through energy-efficiency events or incentives rewarding outstanding performance.”

FRA Praises Article Highlighting Forestry Investment Benefits

A recent feature on forestry investment in SmartMoney Magazine has caught the eye of Forestry Research Associates (FRA) who is thanking the publication for bringing attention to forestry as an asset class.

Seattle, United States, September 29, 2011 -- A recent feature on forestry investment in SmartMoney Magazine has caught the eye of Forestry Research Associates (FRA) who is thanking the publication for bringing attention to forestry as an asset class.

The article, by Brett Arends, talks about how forestry investment can be a great way to shelter money in more volatile economic times. He explained that timberlands have been a favorite among wealthy investors for years, as a result of its strong returns and lower risk, and the asset class is now within reach of all investors thanks to new direct investment opportunities.

FRA, a research and analysis consultancy, said that timberland investments were typically available through funds where minimum investments would often run into hundreds of thousands of dollars. Now, through firms such as Greenwood Management, people can invest as little as $15,000 in a section of forest plantation land in Brazil, Canada or even Costa Rica. These kinds of investment opportunities allow investors to see returns within just a few years, rather than having to wait for trees to grow and reach maturity as all the money is ploughed into the sustainable model that delivers regular returns.

Several larger funds are now putting more of their portfolio into forestry. The SmartMoney article cites Harvard University as a major investor in timberland. The author also claims that Jeremy Grantham, who runs investment firm GMO, has a large amount of his personal portfolio invested in timber. He reportedly once said that timber "has had a history of rising in all great equity bear markets,” adding that the asset is “very safe: If the sun shines and it rains, the trees grow about on schedule."

“Grantham is absolutely right on this,” claimed FRA’s analysis partner, Peter Collins. He added, “Forestry’s low correlation with other assets means that it can withstand slumps that other asset classes simply will not survive, therefore offering a safe haven for money during volatile times.”

For College Students, Avoiding the “Freshman 15” Is a Lesson Worth Learning

Everyone’s heard of the “Freshman 15,” and even when students are trying to eat well, it can be a challenge when time-intensive studies-and a thriving social life-translate into less-than-ideal food choices.

New York, NY - September 29, 2011 -- If you polled students at any college or university, chances are one of their top complaints would be connected to diet. Everyone’s heard of the “Freshman 15,” and even when students are trying to eat well, it can be a challenge when time-intensive studies-and a thriving social life-translate into less-than-ideal food choices.

“Add to the mix the easy availability of fast food restaurants in the vicinity of most campuses (and sometimes on campus itself!), and the result can frequently be weight gain among the student population,” say boomer generation health experts Dian Griesel, Ph.D., and Tom Griesel, authors of the new book TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH).

Dian and Tom offer the following tips for health-conscious college students:

• Eat fruits and veggies at every opportunity.

• Skip the “nutrition” bars-they are fat/sugar combos that do not exist in Nature, and will pack on pounds fast. They won't fill you up, but you'll be consuming 200+ calories per bar.

• Drink water-especially first thing in the morning. You are dehydrated!

• Walk as often as you can-and load up your backpack! The extra weight will build leg and butt muscles that are the greatest calorie burners.

• For every beer, drink of wine, shot, or whatever your alcoholic beverage of choice-drink an eight-ounce glass of water! This will help keep you hydrated and satiated, and slow the effects of alcohol on your metabolism.

• Eat a large salad at least once daily, and skip the creamy dressings that make that salad go from skinny to fat.

• Don't worry if you are not “working out.” Walking, cleaning your room, dancing, playing any sport-all count as activities and burn calories. You don't need to be in a gym.

About TurboCharged:
TurboCharged® is a groundbreaking 8-Step program that defies common weight-loss theories. Dentists can Grow their Practices by Attending the IAPAM's Hands-On Botox ® Training

A new report shows that the market for botox ® is growing at a rate of 9% annually, and dentists are poised to capture a significant portion of this market by attending accredited hands-on, physician-taught botox ® training like that offered by the IAPAM at its respected Aesthetic Medicine Symposium.

Las Vegas, NV, September 29, 2011 -- The market for botox ® treatments is growing. In a report published by GlobalData, "the global market for facial aesthetics is forecast to reach about $4 billion in 2017 at a compound annual growth rate of 9%. The growth is expected to be driven by minimally invasive procedures that offer long term results at competitive pricing." The key to dentists capturing a portion of this growing market is by engaging in comprehensive, hands-on, physician-lead Botox ® Training like that offered at the IAPAM's Aesthetic Medicine Symposium with Botox ® Training (http://www.aestheticmedicinesymposium.com/botoxtraining.html).

Catherine Maley, frequent contributor to the IAPAM and author of Your Aesthetic Practice (http://www.YourAestheticPractice.com), agrees. She comments that a dentist sees "on average 8 dental patients per day. Pareto's Law of 80/20 Rue says that 20% will convert to aesthetics if asked. That's 1.6 patients per day multiplied by the average cost of a Botox ® treatment at $2350 and that equals $560 per day. Now multiply that by 22 working days per month, and multiply that again over 12 months," and an expertly trained dentist could see his/her dental practice grow by over $100,000 in revenue in a year.

Dentists can capture this growth in 2011 and beyond, by attending "all-inclusive" training programs, offered in medical facilities not hotel rooms, and lead by board-certified dermatologists and aesthetic medicine business experts, such as the IAPAM's Aesthetic Medicine Symposiums, the IAPAM's Aesthetic Practice Start-Up Seminars, and the IAPAM's Advanced Botox ® and Dermal Filler Programs.

For more information on the remaining 2011 dates for the IAPAM's Aesthetic Medicine Symposiums and its medical or dental Practice Start-Up Workshops, please visit http://www.iapam.com or contact the IAPAM, at 1-800-219-5108 ext. 704, info@theiapam.com.
