DeYoe Wealth Management Advises Clients to Prepare Now for End of Bush Tax Cuts

Berkeley-based Financial Advisor Offers Concrete Strategies To Minimize Negative Impact from Pending Loss of Tax Incentives.

BERKELEY, Calif - April 14, 2012 -- Jonathan K. DeYoe of DeYoe Wealth Management cautions that planning ahead to address 2012 taxes is just as important as filing 2011 return by April 17. DeYoe is advising his firm’s clients to begin preparing immediately for the end of the Bush Tax Cuts.

Bush signed a number of tax cuts into law in 2001 & 2003 that were extended after a very contentious debate on the congressional floor in 2010. Once they complete their 2011 taxes, DeYoe recommends to his clients that they immediately begin their tax planning for 2012 and beyond, a time without the Bush-era tax incentives.

Once someone receives a benefit, it is very hard to take it away,” said DeYoe. “Unfortunately, given the state of our federal budgets, I think it’s highly unlikely we'll see a continuation of the Bush tax cuts after the end of this year. Spending must come down and tax rates must go up.”

DeYoe recommends that his clients discuss the following strategies with their financial advisor or accountant:

1. No one knows for sure where income tax rates are going, but unless Congress acts with new legislation, both income & investment taxes will increase in 2013. To ease into these tax increases, the first thing taxpayers can do is to accelerate income into 2012. For example, if they are expecting a year-end bonus from their employer, ask to be paid no later than December 31, 2012. If they are a small business owner, taking more income in 2012 and less in 2013. At the same time, defer as many deductions as possible into 2013. If a business can wait to purchase that new equipment or remodel an office until next year, it might be a good idea to do so.

2. To make sure taxpayers are not caught short of cash come tax time next year, review federal and state withholding exemptions now. Should tax rates spike, it will probably be a lot easier to pay a little bit of that tax every month this year rather than having to come up with a large lump sum at tax time in 2013.

3. Once the Bush tax cuts expire, taxpayers can expect that taxes will consume a larger share of all future investment returns. However, investors probably won't see an even increase across the board. For example, taxes on capital gains could go from 15 percent to 20 percent (a 33 percent increase) while taxes on qualified dividends might go from 15 percent to 40 percent (a 164 percent increase). Since the tax changes will affect total return based on the type of assets held, this is definitely worth discussing with a financial planner or investment advisor. Everyone should review their asset allocation together and reduce the “expected” returns built into their financial plan.

4. If investors have large gains in their current portfolios or have company stock options they've been waiting to exercise, 2012 might be a better year to recognize those gains rather than giving up more of those gains to taxes in 2013.

5. Finally, the estate and gift tax exemption is slated to drop from $5 million to $1 million in 2013. This estate and gift tax exemption may be the single best tax management opportunity for large estates in the tax code today. Anyone with a large estate should talk to a CPA, attorney and financial advisor about taking advantage of the gifting portion of this benefit before it disappears.

The clock is ticking,” said DeYoe. “Our recent history tells us that Congress, especially one as divided and contentious as this one, is unpredictable. We can wish that they come together, but a wish is not a plan. We must consider and act upon the reality of coming tax increases at all levels of income.”

Brazil is Attracting Alternative Investors, says AAA

Brazil is attracting a huge amount of investment attention at the moment, claims AAA, who urges investors to consider the Latin American country as a place to make some cash.

Boston, MA, USA, April 14, 2012 -- Brazil is attracting a huge amount of investment attention at the moment, claims Alternative Asset Analysis (AAA), who urges investors to consider the Latin American country as a place to make some cash.

A large number of people who had never before considered alternative investments are now taking a closer look at some possibilities in emerging economies, such as Brazil, China and India. “It’s not as easy as it once was to invest in stocks and shares and make your fortune in the US,” claims AAA’s analysis partner, Anthony Johnson.

Instead, many of us are looking to alternative asset classes, such as real estate, forestry and impact investing in countries that are experiencing rapid economic growth.”

Brazil is set to host the Olympics in 2016 and the FIFA World Cup in 2014. Both of these events have ensured that the local steel industry is booming. AAA said that this has meant growth for the demand for sustainably produced charcoal.

Mr Johnson explained: “Measures have been taken to discourage the steel industry from using unsustainable timber in their charcoal. As a result, plantations, such as the one managed by Greenwood Management, are likely to see huge demand for their ethical products.”

Plantations, such as the ones managed by Greenwood, usually focus on fast-growing, hardy species that can be used in charcoal manufacture, furniture making and construction. AAA said that the demand for timber from sustainable sources is likely to increase further in the coming years as China and India continue to seek out raw materials.

Anyone interested in investing in Brazilian timber plantations can do so from as little as around $15,000. “AAA advocates ethical forestry investment as a way to make a difference while making money.

Ensuring timber is grown using sustainable forestry management methods helps locals to safeguard the future of the industry for the next generation,” added Johnson.

TravelTools Launches Revolutionary Map Cloning Software Capacity for Destination Marketing Organizations

Cartonova recently announced a version upgrade to its TravelTools software. This upgrade gives destination marketers the capacity to build an endless number of interactive Google maps in minutes without additional investments in time, programming, or licensing fees.

Wenonah, NJ, USA - April 14, 2012 -- Cartonova recently launched a new version upgrade of TravelTools-a one-of-a-kind software application that handles DMO website tools such as maps, events, and itinerary-builders. The recent upgrade brings unlimited map-building power to destination marketers and event planners.

Company President Mark Mattson explains, "TravelTools has always made great interactive maps. It’s what we're good at. Like other developers, we made maps one at a time and our clients had to pay for each new map. All that is a thing of the past with Version 2.0. Now, our users can make their own maps in minutes without cost. Each map can have its own geographic focus and zoom level. It can have its own categorization scheme and points of interest. We even added a page template selector so the maps can be fed into specific web pages or mobile apps. Each map is outputted as an embeddable URL or short code.”

Mattson emphasizes the wide-ranging potential of his new product. “Organizations don't need just one good interactive map. They need hundreds. Using our new version, an organization can launch a new map for every convention or trade show. It can even launch a sophisticated map for events as small as block parties or concerts at the park. This type of custom mapping not only helps people, it empowers local businesses and dues-paying members by giving them a chance to be seen at the very times and places where people congregate. Because these maps cost nothing to make, a destination marketer can run a sophisticated $3,000 map for an afternoon event of 500 people and then trash it the very next day. Maps take minutes to make and cost absolutely nothing.”

Mattson also talks about what this means to the overall value propositions of local destination marketers. "These good folks are being asked to do more with less in hard economic times. Dues-paying members increasingly grumble about what organizations have done for them lately. Revenue streams are dwindling. Organizations are looking for ways to fill funding gaps by cutting costs and/or monetizing their assets. Since this new system is highly interactive at any geographic scale or location, destination marketers can use it for general promotions of dues-paying members and/or fee-for-marketing services. Imagine how valuable a system is if you can connect local businesses with attendees at targeted venues and events using advanced technology that is cost free and instantly deployed.”

Moreover, Mattson sees his new product as expanding the tool market horizontally by representing economies that can be passed along to even small organizations that have been traditionally disenfranchised by over-priced technology solutions.

FPL Partners with Indian River State College to Launch Brown Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship

Since the program was developed, we have hired over 60 trained individuals and promoted 24 existing employees because of the skills and knowledge they gained here at IRSC,” Mano Nazar, FPL's Nuclear Division executive vice president and chief nuclear officer.

Juno Beach, FL (April 13, 2012) -- The next generation of FPL nuclear technicians and engineers could very well get their start at Indian River State College’s (IRSC) new Brown Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

The $21.5 million, 65,000 square foot facility at IRSC’s Ft. Pierce campus represents a unique partnership between the college and local business partners, including FPL.

The Brown Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship will focus on educational programs in alternative energy and sustainability. Students will learn how to produce biofuels, construct photovoltaic solar cells, experiment with light technologies, and gain hands-on experience in all aspects of energy efficient building construction.

The center will also feature a nuclear simulator complete with a control room that will help train students to work at Florida Power & Light's St. Lucie or Turkey Point nuclear power plants. The college received a $3.1 million grant from the National Science Foundation to train instructors who will then train students.

The program includes a partnership of schools from 18 states.

FPL donated equipment so students can get real-life experience in a controlled environment.

"I think it's going to play a big part moving into the future," IRSC President Ed Massey told Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers. "By housing the nuclear energy program and the power plant operations program in partnership with Florida Power & Light, again it is meeting a high demand need in our area and putting people in high skill, high-wage paying jobs available in that industry."

The Brown Center represents an extension of the partnership FPL has built with IRSC over the past six years, helping to train students in nuclear technology and place them in jobs immediately following graduation.

"Our partnership with IRSC has been a win-win,” said Mano Nazar, FPL’s Nuclear Division executive vice president and chief nuclear officer. “Since the program was developed in 2006 in partnership with the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers and IRSC, we have hired over 60 trained individuals and promoted 24 existing employees because of the skills and knowledge they gained here at IRSC. This is a great example of how an innovative partnership like this one can really make a difference.”

Biotage unveils Isolera Spektra with full PDA Spectral Scanning

Biotage, a leading global supplier of solutions and technology for analytical and medicinal chemistry, introduced Isolera™ Spektra.

Uppsala, Sweden, April 12, 2012 -- Biotage® (STO: BIOT), a leading global supplier of solutions and technology for analytical and medicinal chemistry, introduced Isolera™ Spektra. The new Isolera™ Spektra expands the scope of application of Biotage’s market-leading Flash Chromatography product line by increasing efficiency with significant solvent and time saving capabilities as well as enabling purity assessment technology.

The new full PDA spectral scanning capability with ?-All detection and baseline correction generates real-time PDA spectral data for eluting compounds. This provides compound detection at any wavelength, enabling chemists to see how pure their eluting compounds are in both real-time and post-purification. Post-purification spectral analysis can also be conducted in both two dimensional and three dimensional displays for improved visibility of impurities and eliminating the need for post-flash TLC purity testing.

The new proprietary TLC-to-Step gradient feature (patent-pending) instantly converts TLC separation data into an efficient step gradient and suggests a sample load for up to six compounds. Chemists can target one or more compounds for isolation, dramatically reducing solvent requirements and purification time compared to linear gradients. Used in conjunction with Biotage® SNAP Ultra cartridges with their 2-3X loading capacity and flow rate advantage, researchers can routinely achieve total processing times and ultra-low solvent consumption volumes which previously were not possible with other flash instruments.

Isolera™ Spektra is a revolutionary enhancement in flash purification. It transforms 1-dimensional flash purification into 3D purification systems that can target a specific compound for isolation and characterize collected fractions for purity and spectral properties” says Bob Bickler, Senior Product Manager, Biotage®. “This technology can have a huge positive impact on the amount of time that researchers need to invest in compound purification as well as the solvents they consume. These system improvements combined with high efficiency columns will quickly pay for themselves in any lab”.

FRA says Bamboo Prices could Rise

FRA says it is “excited” by the prospects of bamboo being hailed as the new super material, which can be used for everything from housebuilding to garment manufacture.

Seattle, United States, April 12, 2012 -- Forestry Research Analysis (FRA) says it is “excited” by the prospects of bamboo being hailed as the new super material, which can be used for everything from housebuilding to garment manufacture.

The research and analysis consultancy, which specialises in the forestry investment sector, claims that bamboo’s uses could make prices rise hugely over coming years, making it a good prospect for alternative investors.

As the demand for raw materials increases in countries like China and India, the price of bamboo, which has so many uses and is a fast growing species, is bound to rise significantly.” FRA claims that bamboo, like other forestry stocks, absorbs carbon from the atmosphere, which means that when grown sustainable, it can offer one of the most cost effective ways of limiting climate change. All this while also producing a material that has so many purposes.

FRA’s analysis partner, Peter Collins, added, “We believe that bamboo, along with teak, eucalyptus, and other fast-growing durable forestry species, offers a wonderful opportunity or environmentally conscious investors.

Prices of these asset classes are expected to grow over the coming years, as emerging economies continue to expand and demand more and more raw materials for construction and infrastructure projects.”

FRA supports investment in sustainable forestry projects, and bamboo, although not strictly a timber product, comes under the same banner. In fact, bamboo is being touted as the ‘timber of the 21st century’.

"As with projects like the plantations run by Greenwood Management and other companies in developing countries, the growing of bamboo in a sustainable way has the potential to help people living in these countries to establish a living and safeguard it for the next generation, providing proper forestry management techniques are used,” added Collins.

Local Middle Schoolers Power Radio Station with Wind Energy by FPL Grant

"FPL began our teacher grant program to provide funds for creative, exciting classroom projects that spark curiosity and give our children exposure to real-world applications of the science behind everyday energy use," said Maureen Wilt of FPL.

Juno Beach, FL (April 12, 2012) -- Stroll onto the campus of the David Lawrence Jr. K-8 Center School in North Miami, and one of the first things you'll see is a waterfall powered by solar panels. Round a corner, and you'll stumble upon a working wind turbine. A few steps further, a team of pre-teens is constructing a radio transmission tower under the direction of teacher Laurie Futterman.

This month, Ms. Futterman won her second grant from Florida Power & Light Company to implement student projects exploring renewable energy. The solar waterfall was the result of her first grant, and took about a year to complete. For her next project, she dreamed even bigger.

This year’s FPL grant will help Ms. Futterman and the school’s “Green Team” apply a wind turbine they built to provide power to a radio tower, which will broadcast student announcements of school events and programs to parents’ car radios as they pick up or drop off their children.

The Green Team started out as an afterschool environmental police force who audited classrooms for wasted energy. Thanks to the grants, the group has evolved into a green engineering club, taking on projects like building the solar powered waterfall, wind turbine, and now radio transmission tower.

In preparation for the project, Ms. Futterman had her students read “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind,” the story of a boy in Malawi who used tree limbs, a bike tire, and old junk parts to build a wind turbine that powered lights in his family’s house.

The Green Team’s project is just as hands-on. In constructing the wind turbine, the students prepped, primed, and riveted parts and hand-coiled copper wire. They're nearly ready to run a wire underground to the radio tower and up the PVC pipes that form the legs of the tower, and mount the antenna. Next up: the students will work on the radio station and announcements.

There’s only so much a teacher can do in the classroom, and we're grateful to have the grants for an invaluable opportunity to actually put green energy into motion,” said Ms. Futterman. “I see our students truly inspired and energized by their mission. They work after school every Monday until about five o'clock - they even worked through their winter vacation!”

The radio tower project was made possible with a $1,600 grant from FPL to spur innovative and critical science, technology, engineering, and math education in the classroom. While so-called “STEM” education is seen as the key to job growth and global competitiveness, public funds to support it are scarce.

There’s no doubt that STEM classes are one of the most important components in today’s education,” said Maureen Wilt of FPL. “That’s why FPL began our teacher grant program – to provide funds for creative, exciting classroom projects that spark curiosity and give our children exposure to real-world applications of the science behind everyday energy use. This is the third year of FPL’s grant program and so far, we've been able to support 84 amazing classroom projects across Florida. We can't wait to see what our state’s teachers come up with next year.”

You can keep track of the Green Team’s progress on Facebook with videos, pictures, and status updates from “Ms. Futterman’s Science Page.” Or, learn more about FPL’s education initiatives at http://www.fpl.com/community/learning.

FRA 'disappointed' in US Illegal Timber Imports

FRA has said it is ‘disappointed’ to hear that the US is still regularly importing illegally logged timber from the Amazon rain forest.

Seattle, United States, April 11, 2012 -- Forestry Research Associates (FRA) has said it is ‘disappointed’ to hear that the US is still regularly importing illegally logged timber from the Amazon rain forest.

A recent long-term research study by the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) has found that millions of dollars worth of timber has been imported into the US by over 20 US-based businesses since 2008.

The report stated, "Exporters in Peru and importers in the United States and around the world are currently integral parts of a systematic flow of illegal timber from the Peruvian Amazon.”

Peter Collins, an analysis partner at research and analysis consultancy FRA, said, “We are disappointed to learn that illegal logging is still seen as OK among so many US businesses, who are willing to support the trade in timber that has been sourced from vulnerable forests.”

Although the report claims that “sheer negligence” is somewhat to blame, US firms should see sustainable sourcing of timber as an obligation, claimed FRA. Mr Collins added, “It’s not difficult these days to source sustainably produced timber and it doesn't have to cost the earth.”

FRA supports projects like the FSC scheme, which clearly labels sustainable timber to help consumers make the right choices when buying timber products.

The EIA investigation was carried out over several years and found that US firms illegally laundered and imported 112 shipments of protected mahogany and cedar from the Peruvian Amazon between 2008 and 2010 alone.

The report does not hold back, stating, “Sometimes intentionally, sometimes through sheer negligence, each of the actors and agencies involved in this system are working as gears in a well-oiled machine that is ransacking Peru's forests and undermining the livelihoods and rights of the people that depend on them.”

FRA supports sustainably managed forestry schemes in Latin America, such as the plantations runs by Greenwood Management in Brazil. US investors are able to invest in these projects, helping them to thrive and reaping the financial benefits of growing timber prices, explained FRA.

Experts Connection Shows Executive Recruiters How to Predict a Great Hire through the Behavioral Interview

Recruiting Expert Matt Gill Explains How Hiring Managers Can Minimize the Risk of a Bad Hire Using Interviews that Can Be Adapted for Any Role.

NOVATO, Calif. (April 10, 2012) – A recent survey reveals that a bad hiring decision costs an employer between $25,000 and $50,000, yet many companies use an ad hoc approach to hiring. Behavioral interviewing minimizes the risk of a bad hire, as recruiting expert Matt Gill will explain in the next session of the Experts Connection (http://www.experts-connection.com/recruiter.aspx) webinar series for executive recruiters. The session, entitled “Predicting the “Right Hire”: The Art of the Behavioral Interview,” is scheduled for Thursday, April 26, from 4:00 - 5:30 p.m. ET, (1:00 - 2:30 p.m. PT), and is sponsored by NETSHARE® (http://www.netshare.com).

Behavioral interviewing is based on the premise that past behavior or performance will predict future behavior and performance. When correctly crafted, a behavioral interview allows the interviewer to learn how a candidate actually performed in his or her previous job, and whether they should be a good fit for the position at hand. When included as part of the hiring process, a behavioral interview can be an excellent barometer that managers can use to identify the best candidate.

In this online class, Matt will explain how to develop, administer, and evaluate a behavioral interview that can be customized to suit any position. Matt will reveal how to incorporate the needs of the company, the department, and the position, and how to prepare for the interview itself. Matt will include tips on how to work with the hiring managers to ensure that they will gather the right information for evaluation.

Specific topics to be covered include:

- Creating a behavioral interview that can be adapted for any job role.
- Conducting a behavioral interview, including how to use specific behavioral questions.
- How to guide “off-message” candidates to drill down to get to relevant, even critical information.
- How to assimilate that information to make the best hiring decision.

Many companies continue to make bad hiring decisions because they don't have the right interviewing processes in place for job candidates,” said Katherine Simmons, CEO of NETSHARE and host of the Experts Connection webinars. “Behavioral interviews are a proven way to screen candidates to determine whether they will perform as required, and if they will be a good fit for the company. Understanding how to use a behavioral interview for candidate selection minimizes the risk of making a disastrous hiring decision.”
