Bright Futures Await Next Generation of Engineering Leaders at FPL

This week, FPL hosted the North American-Young Generation in Nuclear Conference in Jupiter, Fla. as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to recruit a new generation of highly-skilled leaders into the nuclear workforce.

Juno Beach, FL, November 10, 2011 -- This week, FPL hosted the North American-Young Generation in Nuclear Conference in Jupiter, Fla. as part of the company’s ongoing efforts to recruit a new generation of highly-skilled leaders into the nuclear workforce.

The conference, titled Future Leaders of Energy: Powering the Next Generation, featured professional development seminars by industry experts representing the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations, Nuclear Energy Institute, Luminant, Southern Company, and FPL.

One of the attendees and an active participant in the Young Generation in Nuclear group was FPL engineer Angelica Baez-Roman. Baez-Roman was recruited in 2008, along with 29 other graduates of the University of Puerto Rico, to work at the company’s Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant in southwest Miami-Dade County. Since then, Angelica and her fellow alums have worked hard, settling into the South Florida community and, in many cases, dedicating themselves to inspiring other young engineers to consider jobs in the nuclear industry.

Moving to another country and starting a new job isn't always easy, but my life’s experiences to date have helped me understand that anything is possible if you work hard enough,” said Baez-Roman.

After studying at the Centro Residencial de Oportunidades Educativas (Residential Center of Educational Opportunities), a public boarding school in Puerto Rico specializing in math and science, Baez-Roman went on to the University of Puerto Rico where she studied mechanical engineering.

I was only in my junior year of college when my friend convinced me to go to a job fair,” said Baez-Roman. “I walked up to FPL’s booth, handed them my resume and participated in an interview and I was offered a job a few days later. A year later, as an engineering graduate, I walked into Turkey Point. It was the first time I'd ever been at a nuclear power plant, and it was very exciting.”

Baez-Roman says she loves the science of producing energy. A short time after starting work at Turkey Point she joined Next Generation in Nuclear, a group of young engineers who encourage students interested in math and science to consider jobs in the industry.

Our goal is to communicate that as we focus more as a nation on conservation and renewable energy, nuclear power will continue to play an important role in our energy mix,” said Baez-Roman. “We know that nuclear energy is the lowest-cost, round-the-clock power source that generates power without fossil fuels, which means no emissions and no fuel cost spikes. And, speaking from personal experience, the present and future of energy is dynamic, and the career opportunities are vast.”

The key is to do what you love, set your goals and look forward because you will have to work hard and make sacrifices like leaving your family or moving to a new place. I think that anything is possible as long as you work hard and do your best.”

Baez-Roman is now working on obtaining her professional engineering license and then plans to take on a master’s degree program in mechanical engineering.

Michigan Consumer Law Attorney to Join FTC Roundtable On Auto Leasing & Loans Nov 17

Ian Lyngklip, senior member of Lyngklip & Associates Consumer Law Center, PLC, Southfield, has been invited by the FTC to be a panelist on a workshop it is sponsoring entitled “The Road Ahead: Selling, Financing & Leasing Motor Vehicles.”

SOUTHFIELD, Mich., November 05, 2011 -- A Michigan attorney who has represented hundreds of consumers in disputes with some of the largest financial institutions in America is helping the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to explore how car buyers can avoid harmful leasing and financing transactions.

The workshop, the final of three FTC-sponsored roundtable events staged this year, will be held 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. November 17, 2011, at the FTC Conference Center in Washington, DC. A live webcast will be held for those who cannot attend the workshop. The topics covered will be motor vehicle leasing, spot delivery and other consumer issues.

A spot delivery, or yo-yo sale,” says Lyngklip, “happens when the car dealer sells the consumer a vehicle and completes all the steps necessary to sell the car including executing a contract of sale, signing title, taking a down payment and turning over the keys. After the transaction is finished, the dealer calls the consumer back claiming the deal has fallen through. In some instances the dealer uses fraudulent means or forcible repossession to take the car back.”

Furthermore,” adds Lyngklip, “these consumer frauds happen regularly when the dealer learns that it cannot make as much money as it expected on the transaction or when a finance company refuses to buy the deal or purchase it on the terms that it had originally agreed to with the dealer. Either way, the consumer has a binding contract and has every right to expect the dealer to honor it. If the dealer does not honor the contract, the consumer may lose a down payment or trade-in vehicle."

The workshops are being sponsored by the FTC to gather information on possible consumer protection remedies it may wish to pursue in its role of guarding consumers against mistreatment, misrepresentation or outright fraud. For information go to http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/workshops/motorvehicles/.

I have spent my career in law standing up for victims of some shady actors in the auto leasing and financing fields,” says Lyngklip. “I am proud to participate in this workshop and assist the FTC in any way I can in trying to stop these predatory practices before more consumers become prey.”

Lyngklip, who regularly appears as a speaker and panelist at national events, has been named Consumer Advocate of the Year by the National Association of Consumer Advocates and also earned the Frank Kelly Consumer Advocate Award from the Michigan State Bar Association Consumer Law Section.

Lyngklip has been quoted as an expert on consumer law by such national publications as Smart Money magazine, Wall Street Journal Money Watch, the New York Times and Kiplinger's. He is one of 5% of all lawyers designated as a Super Lawyer and has testified for the Michigan House of Representatives as well as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

About Ian Lyngklip
Ian Lyngklip is an experienced lawyer representing consumers in disputes with debt collectors, car dealers, banks, credit reporting agencies and bad corporate actors. FPL Engineer Honors Native Haitian Roots

Haitian-born Johnny Pierre has found his piece of the American Dream. Now Pierre spends his free time helping others from his native Haiti achieve their own success.

Juno Beach, FL, November 05, 2011 -- Haitian-born Johnny Pierre has found his piece of the American Dream. He overcame great hardship, growing up in the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, and worked hard to become an engineer at Florida Power & Light Company. Now Pierre spends his free time helping others from his native Haiti achieve their own success.

Doing the right thing isn't always easy, but it certainly is rewarding when you know that your actions are directly helping someone,” said Pierre. “My family and I moved to the United States from Haiti when I was nine years old. I'm 27 now and I have had many wonderful opportunities during my life, and I like to extend help to my former homeland whenever possible.”

Pierre is an engineer at FPL’s Broward Service Center in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. and responsible for making sure the power lines coming in and going out of substations are operating efficiently, thus leading to reliable service for customers. As a student at the University of South Florida, Pierre and his friends created Nouvelle Generation, an organization to help residents of Haiti and the neighboring Dominican Republic - two of the poorest and least developed areas in the world. Not solely a fundraising organization, Pierre and the organizations co-founders personally visit the islands to tackle projects that can have a direct impact on the local community.

All year long, we collect donations and items like shoes, clothing and school supplies, and we figure out the least expensive way to ship supplies to the islands,” said Pierre. “Then we travel there once a year to personally deliver the goods to groups or individuals that we know need the help. Sure, it'd be nice to take a vacation and just relax, but for me, that wouldn't come close to matching the feeling I get from helping others in need.”

During their most recent trip, the group visited orphanages and bateyes, or large sugar cane farming towns, to distribute supplies in addition to helping a woman whose school had been nearly destroyed during last year’s devastating earthquake. According to Pierre, for the school’s impoverished students, there is no other option - there isn't a bus system to take them to another school, and they can't afford to pay for transportation, so much of the visit was dedicated to helping repair the facility so the kids could get back in the classroom as soon as possible.

My friends and I enjoy seeing the difference our organization is making, and we always appreciate new volunteers or donations,” said Pierre. “The support I have received from the people I work with here at FPL has been terrific and it has helped a lot of kids and adults who otherwise would have nothing.”

Climate Change Corruption Report Highlighted by FRA

Forestry Research Associates (FRA) is keen to highlight the finding of the Global Corruption Report on climate change, which found that Kenya is dishonestly claiming credits for non-existent forestry plantations.

Seattle, United States, November 05, 2011 -- Forestry Research Associates (FRA) is keen to highlight the finding of the Global Corruption Report on climate change, which found that Kenya is dishonestly claiming credits for non-existent forestry plantations.

The report found that Kenya is among the governments that have claimed credits for fictional plantations. The report's results are being highlighted by FRA, a research and analysis consultancy that focuses on sustainable forestry and forestry investments. FRA analyst Peter Collins, said, “These carbon credit schemes were set up to benefit developing nations like Kenya by giving their governments the chance to receive credits for increasing the amount of sustainable forestry taking place within their borders. However, it seems these carbon credit schemes are sadly being abused.”

The report has done little to allay fears that such schemes could be wasted in African nations that still struggle with major corruption issues within their governments. The report, which was introduced this week at a conference in a Nairobi hotel, stated, ‘When responses to climate change are then partially or substantially lost to corruption, not only does the quality of projects suffer, but the result is that the ongoing effects of climate change are worst for those who can least afford it.’

Meanwhile, the executive director of the Climate Change Network Africa, Grace Akumu, said that the Kenyan government has the best set of policies in place to try to reduce climate change and protect the environment. However, she added that the policies need to be adhered to and followed in order to prevent climate change crises in the future.

Some have suggested that a good way to reduce corruption is to involve the public more and make information available to them on a greater level. Some countries, like Brazil, are benefiting from plantation projects as they are generating credits and also attracting foreign investment, through plantation schemes run by companies like Greenwood Management.

You Are Now Entering the Most Dangerous Time of the Year

We are talking about the upcoming holiday season, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Not only do the number of alcohol related accidents increase but also, so do waistlines.

New York, NY - November 03, 2011 -- That’s right. We are talking about the upcoming holiday season, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Eve. Not only do the number of alcohol related accidents increase but also, so do waistlines.

Most people experience their (relatively) lowest weight and best muscle tone around September every year. This is usually because of New Year resolutions and more activity over the summer. In the same way, most people see all their results evaporate and disappear by the time New Year’s Day comes around.

The fall is party time and most of us are conditioned to join in on all the festivities. As early as Halloween, the parties bring candy, cookies, cakes, bagels, huge dinners, eggnog, ice cream, lots of alcohol and late nights which all add up to a major overload on our bodies. Nobody wants to be a party pooper.

Are we doomed to fall into this vicious cycle?

It is very possible to survive and even thrive during the holiday season if you recognize the pitfalls and plan ahead,” say Dian Griesel, Ph.D. and Tom Griesel and authors of the new book, TurboCharged: Accelerate Your Fat Burning Metabolism, Get Lean Fast and Leave Diet and Exercise Rules in the Dust (April 2011, BSH). (http://www.amazon.com/dp/1936705001) “The secret to navigating holidays is to set a goal that allows you to participate without all the collateral damage that usually occurs.” What kind of goal you may ask?

It is not mandatory that you gain weight and get fatter during the holiday season. A goal of actually reducing body fat and toning muscle between now and New Year’s Day, is ideal,” according to Tom Griesel. “Just have a plan. Remember, many are successful at having extra cash for presents in December because they started saving in September. You can do the same thing to stay in shape or even better, improve your body and health so you arrive at parties extra spectacular!”

The first step is getting over your skepticism and contemplating the possibilities and the benefits. Establish your goal and let everyone know what it is. You'll be surprised when others think it’s a great idea. Those that don't are not your concern. Post a copy of your goal on your refrigerator, bathroom mirror, computer screen and anyplace else that will allow you to see it often. This will serve as a constant reminder to both your conscious and subconscious mind. The results of taking just this one step will amaze you. The Griesels conclude, “Do not be afraid of setting a goal that is a bit of a stretch. Shoot for the moon and even if you miss, you will still end up out there with the stars!”
